TLDR

The Financial Times reports that China rejected an EU request to voluntarily restrict its surging hybrid car exports to the bloc as the two sides enter last-ditch talks to avert a trade conflict. One reply called the request “ridiculous” and questioned whether companies should be told to reject incoming orders.

Eu Unul@Euunul@Brad_Setser As expected. Demanding other country to curb its exports is ridiculous, what are they supposed to do, tel companies to reject orders that keep on coming? That would be like telling French to stop exporting champagne.12h
Bernie@ArtemisfornowSometimes I am still surprised at just how stupid politicians and civil servants are. Let’s take this … raising tariffs on Chinese cars to 45% in line with the EU. 3 easy steps of stupidity…. 1. British consumers get a price INCREASE! making the UK’s Net Zero targets even harder to hit! 2. China still wins - China dominates the supply of EV batteries, battery materials and critical mineral processing. British cars are ASSEMBLED here. Much of what goes into British EVs still comes from China. 3. Then there’s this madness! … China gets paid TWICE. Under the UK’s Net Zero vehicle mandate, British carmakers that don’t sell enough electric cars can pay Chinese manufacturers for their spare Net Zero credits to avoid government penalties. So China can make money even when we DON’T buy their cars! Brilliant! We pay more, Net Zero targets get harder to meet, and China wins regardless All to keep Brussels happy. 🤡1h
