EU-China auto deal initially caps Chinese hybrid exports to Europe at 350,000
The cap eases pressure on Europe's auto industry, but CFR fellow Brad Setser says the EU's trade policy remains incomplete.
TLDR
The limit is above the 300,000 hybrids China exported to Europe in 2025 but below the 800,000 annualized pace in the last three months of European data. Setser says the cap rises to 370,000 and 390,000 in subsequent years. He argues that battery-electric tariffs may not slow Chinese exports enough and that Europe lacks a standard policy ensuring Chinese assembly plants use European parts.
