Claude reportedly found an enzyme system with CRISPR-like DNA repeats
Anthropic says roughly 950 Claude agents searched DNA data for 21 hours, with humans handling the initial prompt and lab work. The company says the system’s function remains unknown.
TLDR
In a September 23, 2026 announcement, Anthropic said Claude identified a previously uncharacterized enzyme system called ART in bacteriophages—viruses that infect bacteria. The company says the search used roughly 950 agents and 210 million tokens over 21 hours, followed by human analysis and lab testing. The underlying reverse transcriptase, an enzyme that copies RNA into DNA, was already known. Anthropic says Claude appears to be the first to notice the system’s defining features: associated DNA repeats and an accessory protein. Although the repeats resemble CRISPR’s, the company says it does not yet know what ART does or whether it could be put to similar use.
