Figma is rolling out Specs, a collaborative writing surface designed to keep product requirements, design decisions and technical context next to the work they describe. The feature is entering open beta for paid plans on Figma’s web, desktop and mobile apps, with access expanding gradually.
Specs uses a Markdown-like editor, but it lives on the Figma canvas instead of in a separate document. Teams can use it to set down design-system rules, implementation notes or other project guidance that both colleagues and connected AI agents can reference. The aim is to reduce the context lost when a project moves among documents, design files and code.
Keeping context beside the work
A Spec can reference a Figma frame or node and embed FigJam diagrams, designs and code layers. Those links stay attached to the surrounding text, giving readers a visual path back to the element under discussion rather than asking them to hunt through a file.
Figma says AI agents can read and reply to comments inside Specs. Teams can also bring in outside context through GitHub and Hex integrations, or send a Spec to a coding agent through Figma’s Model Context Protocol tools. These are workflow connections, not a promise that an agent will interpret every rule correctly, so the shared document still gives people a place to review decisions and resolve ambiguity.
Code layers and Payload move toward shipping
The company is also putting code layers into public beta across all plans. Code layers place working code on the canvas, where designers and developers can compare it with visual components, import projects from GitHub or a local folder, and ask an agent to refine the implementation. Figma says the feature uses AI credits when those are included in a plan.
A separate Payload integration gives projects made in Figma Make access to a hosted backend, database and file storage, plus user login and an administrative interface. Figma says the integration is rolling out to all accounts over the coming weeks. The hosting service remains in beta and is free during that period, with pricing to be announced later.
Taken together, the launches push Figma beyond static handoff files. Specs holds the written intent, code layers connect designs to executable components, and Payload adds the data and account services needed for more functional prototypes. Each piece is still arriving through a beta or staged rollout, so availability may vary by plan and account.
