Microsoft envisions every PC as a 'secure agent box' for AI

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella laid out a vision for Windows PCs that run more capable AI models locally and give AI agents a place to work within security boundaries. In remarks at Microsoft's fiscal Q1 2027 earnings call, he described a goal of making every PC a “secure agent box.” It was a statement of direction, not a claim that every PC can do this today.

Nadella said locally running models create an opportunity for effectively unmetered AI intelligence. He did not present that as a guarantee of unlimited or free use. Microsoft is working with hardware partners on a new generation of PCs, he said, naming AMD Ryzen AI 400, Intel Core Ultra Series 3 and Qualcomm Snapdragon X2.

The other part of the plan concerns what agents are allowed to do. Nadella said Microsoft is bringing Windows and Agent 365, its platform for managing and monitoring AI agents, together so agents can work within security boundaries on a device. He also described Microsoft Execution Containers as a policy-driven layer intended to govern and contain agents across Windows and other platforms. Those are Microsoft's stated plans and design goals, not a demonstration that the protections work on every PC.
