OpenAI announced ChatGPT for Academic Researchers, granting scientists, mathematicians, and engineers free access to its most advanced models including the GPT-5.6 family. The program starts with 10,000 participants and scales to 100,000 through 2027. Workspaces include business-grade privacy and security, with researcher data not used for training by default. OpenAI states the goal is to spread frontier AI benefits beyond companies and labs so researchers can tackle the hardest problems and accelerate breakthroughs across disciplines.
