Google Photos adds a Redact pen for blurring sensitive details

Google Photos is adding a Redact pen that lets Android users blur sensitive details before sharing an image. The tool is part of an upgraded markup editor rolling out globally, according to Google's September 24 product announcement.

Google's demonstration places Redact beside the existing Pen, Highlighter and Text controls. It shows a user obscuring the license plate in a photo of a car advertised for sale, illustrating the practical target: information that belongs in the original photo but not necessarily in the copy sent to someone else or posted online.

The markup update also introduces more precise thickness sliders for drawings and additional fonts for text overlays. Google did not announce an iOS rollout for this part of the package; its availability note specifically says Android worldwide.

Redact arrived in a broader Google Photos release that includes Moods filters, 15 new Remix templates, a Wardrobe feature and Photos integration with Gemini Spark. Those tools have different platform, country, age and subscription requirements, so the global Android rollout for the markup editor does not apply to every item in the announcement.

The inherited Cluster copy described Redact as AI-powered, echoing secondary coverage. Google's primary announcement uses AI or adaptive language for other features but describes Redact simply as a pen inside the markup tool. The reviewed copy therefore keeps the supported function and drops the unsupported implementation claim.
