Google tests Gemini calling businesses for Pixel 11 owners

The U.S.-only experiment lets subscribers watch a live transcript and take over while the AI handles menus, holds and conversations.

Google is testing a Pixel 11 feature that lets Gemini place routine phone calls to businesses on a user's behalf, expanding the company's automated calling tools from navigating phone systems to conducting the conversation itself.

The early preview of Call for Me is rolling out in the United States to Gemini subscribers enrolled in the Phone by Google beta on the Pixel 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro XL and 11 Pro Fold, according to 9to5Google. It is not yet a general Android release.

Gemini can call from the user's own phone number, identify itself, navigate automated menus, wait on hold and speak with the person who answers. Google says example tasks include asking whether a store has an item in stock, reserving restaurant seating, moving an appointment or placing an item on hold.

Users can watch and take over

The phone displays a live transcript while the call is underway, and the user can take control at any point. TechCrunch reports that Gemini may share personal information only after the user approves it for the call.

Call for Me builds on Google's earlier calling features. Direct My Call exposes phone-tree options on screen, Hold for Me waits for a person to answer, and Ask for Me can make narrower inquiries about prices or services. The new experiment is broader because Gemini can handle the conversation needed to complete a task.

Google says it is limiting the rollout while it learns how the system handles nuanced real-world conversations. That caution matters for both customers and the workers receiving the calls: a successful demo is not the same as reliable performance across accents, noisy lines, unusual requests and business policies.
