TLDR

OpenAI and Meta are both pushing toward personal AI devices after earlier dedicated gadgets struggled, but The Verge reports their immediate strategy centers on software agents designed to be useful and cute. OpenAI introduced Dots at DevDay as personalizable, always-on agents, with Sam Altman describing them as helpers that can take on large pieces of work and proactively assist over time. Meta, meanwhile, is tying its upcoming pendant-like Muse Charm to its Muse agent. The Verge reports Meta aims to launch that device before this year’s holiday shopping season, while OpenAI’s hardware effort with Jony Ive is planned no earlier than February 2027.

After earlier dedicated AI gadgets struggled to catch on, OpenAI and Meta are now pursuing personal AI devices through a software-first approach that The Verge describes as a bet on agents that are both useful and cute.

The two companies are moving on different timelines. The Verge reports that OpenAI is working with former Apple designer Jony Ive on hardware planned to ship no earlier than February 2027. Meta, by contrast, aims to launch a pendant-like device before this year’s holiday shopping season.

For now, OpenAI’s public push is centered on software. At DevDay, the company introduced a new agent platform called Dots, which The Verge described as personalizable colored blobs with eyes. In a press Q&A, Sam Altman said Dots feels like an always-on helper and collaborator that can take on very large pieces of work, get to know the user, and help proactively over time.

WIRED similarly framed Dots as always-on agents that proactively complete tasks and make autonomous decisions as they scour the web, and described OpenAI’s Dots and Meta’s Muse as competing to become a user’s preferred personal AI agent.

Meta is tying its hardware effort more directly to that kind of assistant. The Verge reports the company is pairing its recently released Muse agent with a device called the Muse Charm. Mark Zuckerberg compared it to a keychain, and The Verge said the device has a screen showing the cuddly-looking Muse character, giving it a Tamagotchi-like feel.

Taken together, the two efforts point to another attempt at consumer AI hardware, this time led by software agents that companies hope users will want to keep around before asking them to wear or carry a dedicated device.
