President Donald Trump plans to host Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei for a private White House dinner Sunday evening, Sept. 27, Axios reports, citing sources familiar with the plans.
Trump personally invited Amodei after a scheduling conflict kept him from last week’s state dinner, according to Axios. The outlet describes Sunday’s dinner as their first one-on-one meeting. It precedes a broader gathering of leading AI executives that Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson plan to hold Tuesday.
The safety debate behind the invitation
Amodei’s position goes beyond a general warning that AI could be dangerous. In his September essay, “We Must Pace the Frontier,” he argues that improvements in the most capable models should slow enough for safety work to keep up. He distinguishes that approach from stopping model training or technical progress altogether.
His proposal starts with outside evaluators embedded inside AI companies, with access comparable to internal safety teams. Anthropic committed to that step in the essay. Amodei also called for common standards among companies in democratic countries, followed by efforts at international coordination, including with China.
The proposed evaluators would check safety practices, report incidents and assess how models are trained, rather than examining only finished products. Amodei argues that AI’s growing ability to help build subsequent AI systems could accelerate development beyond companies’ ability to understand and control it. That is his assessment of the risk, not an established timetable for such an outcome.
