Colton Herta earned the final point needed to apply for an F1 Super Licence during Brazilian Grand Prix first practice, The Race reported. By completing the required 100km, he reached the 40-point threshold, combining the Brazil point with four other qualifying practice outings and his IndyCar results.
The Race reported that Cadillac had thought Herta completed the requirement in Mexico. But the team's FIA-verified calculations included an error on IndyCar's website, the outlet reported, leaving him needing another first-practice outing in Brazil to reach the total.
The distinction is between earning enough points to apply and receiving the licence. ChrisMedlandF1 described Herta reaching 100km as making him “able to apply for that licence now.” Motorsport likewise reported that he had “banked enough points to apply.”
For Cadillac, that removes a licensing obstacle to a potential driver change. The Race described Herta's milestone as removing a key obstacle to him replacing Valtteri Bottas in 2027 if the team chooses. That remains a conditional possibility, not an awarded race seat.
