Lunar Link reportedly completes major tests as ESA studies a new use

ESA and prime contractor Thales Alenia Space began a qualification and acceptance review in September 2026, with completion expected by the end of that year. ESA says the flight hardware will enter controlled storage after the review and a final software update, while its future is decided.

A possible new role

In July 2026, ESA issued an invitation to tender for studies of how to repurpose Lunar Link. ESA says a platform and an additional antenna for a link to Earth could turn the system into an independent communications relay. The studies will examine spacecraft concepts, orbital options, schedules and possible cooperation with ESA's Moonlight programme. ESA has not named a replacement mission.

ESA says OASIS is designed to provide at least 75 W by day and 15 W during lunar nights.
