Mouse study links a gut immune-cell sensor to colitis-related pain
In Science Immunology, researchers trace a Piezo1 and nerve growth factor pathway that heightens gut sensitivity in mice.
TLDR
Researchers in Science Immunology found that removing Piezo1 from gut-resident macrophages reduced pain-related responses to colon distension in mice. Disrupting nerve growth factor signaling also reduced those responses, including in a model without overt mucosal inflammation. The team reanalyzed human ulcerative colitis biopsy data, but tested the proposed pain pathway in mice, not patients.
