Russian ornithologist sentenced to 3.5 years in penal colony over anticorruption donations

A Moscow court sentenced ornithologist Sofya Rozenfeld to 3.5 years in a penal colony on October 7 over two 1,000-ruble donations to the Anti-Corruption Foundation. Rozenfeld said the recurring payments continued while she was on a long scientific expedition without communications and that she canceled them after learning Russia had designated the organization “extremist.” Her institute documents her research on Northern Palearctic waterfowl.
