TLDR

A post describes Abric Romaní in Capellades, Barcelona, as a 60,000-year-old Neanderthal wood workshop. It calls the assemblage the largest and most diverse of its kind documented and also lists a club-like object among the finds. The author argues the discovery challenges stereotypes of Neanderthals as intellectually limited, pointing to birch bark glue and cave art as other examples of their capabilities.

Ancient History X@AncientEpoch🚨 New Discovery Must Force a Neanderthal Reckoning 🚨 Neanderthals Just Keep Getting More Interesting. 60,000-Year-Old Complex Wood Workshop Discovered at a rock Shelter in Capellades, Barcelona. The site, Abric Romaní, preserves the largest and most diverse Neanderthal wooden artifact assemblage ever documented. Spears, pointed tools, trays, structural elements, and a unique club-like object, all preserved through travertine. Wood rarely survives archaeologically. But Abric Romaní is exceptional because travertine incrustation fossilized negative imprints of wood. Neanderthals didn’t just survive in that cliffside shelter it was a factory. In the past decade we have learned about Neanderthals creating birch bark glue, setting up a fat rendering factory. Creating sophisticated cave art. When will the monicker of dumb brut be lifted, I think it's about time.9h
