Seven cuttlefish with an added gene glow red under fluorescent light
Science Magazine reports that the preprint describes the first successful addition of a new gene to a cephalopod.
TLDR
Science Magazine reports that Columbia University neuroscientist Tessa Montague produced seven cuttlefish whose cells carry a synthetic fluorescent-protein gene after six years of work with thousands of embryos. The animals glow red under fluorescent light, and their offspring glow too. Montague hopes to use fluorescent neurons to study how cuttlefish brains control camouflage. The work is posted as a preprint.
