Overview:
Founded in 2005, Pets Best is a pet insurance company that earns top marks from such consumer rating organizations like the Better Business Bureau. The company offers pet parents a range of options for protecting their best friends and their budgets, including accident, illness and preventive care coverage. Pets Best is headquartered in Boise, Idaho.
Coverage
Pets Best offers three levels of coverage for your furry friend, whether he's a retriever named Rex or a feline named Fiona.
The Essentials plan covers most of the vet services you'd expect. But it costs less because it doesn't include exam fees for accidents or illnesses. Nor does it pay out for rehabilitative, acupuncture, or chiropractic care.
The Plus plan adds exam fees to the list of covered services. Pet exam fees can amount to a substantial portion of your bill for any vet visit. Depending on where you live, exam fees run upwards of $50. So it may make sense for you to pay a somewhat higher premium to get this coverage, especially if your pet isn't in the best of health. Incidentally, not all pet insurance companies even offer the option of having exam fees covered!
Pets Best's Elite plan includes everything in the Plus plan plus rehabilitative, acupuncture, and chiropractic care. So if you're a believer in non-traditional medicine, the plan may mesh with your healthcare philosophy.
Pets Best also offers two tiers of wellness plans that can be added to any policy. These plans cover annual exams, vaccinations, and other routine care.
Pets Best only offers two coverage limit options. The first is a modest (though certainly reasonable) $5000 per year and the second is unlimited coverage. Interestingly, the price increase for choosing unlimited coverage is nominal: just a matter of a few dollars. So extra-cautious pet owners can put their minds at ease without spending a paw and a tail.
Pricing
Pet insurance policy prices vary depending on a wide range of factors including your pet's breed, age, health history, and even your location. (Policies are more expensive if you live in a city where the cost of living is high. That's because vet visits will cost your insurer more.) Other pricing variables include:
- The deductible you choose. A deductible is the amount of money you'll have to spend out-of-pocket before you can be reimbursed for a claim. Higher deductibles will bring premium prices down
- Your coverage limits: That's the maximum amount an insurer will play in claims for any given year. The higher your coverage limits are, the higher your premiums will be.
- Your reimbursement level: Just like people's health insurance, pet insurance comes with co-pays. Most pet insurers allow you to choose the percentage of your vet bills they will pay. Percentages typically run from 70% to 90%. The lower percentage you choose, the lower your premiums will be.
- The number and type of conditions and vet services covered: Pets Best offers three different plans. The more conditions and services that are covered under each, the higher your premiums will be.
To give you an idea of how much pet insurance through Pets Best might cost you, we ran some numbers. You can get a free quote on Pets Best's website and run your own numbers, of course. But for a hypothetical one-year-old mixed breed dog living in a mid-size Midwestern city, premiums ran from $26.55 to $34.21, depending on the plan selected. We selected unlimited coverage limits, a $250 deductible, and an 80% reimbursement level, but it's easy to compare how varying those factors will affect your premiums when you request a quote on the Pets Best platform.
Not to exclude cat owners, we also ran some numbers for a hypothetical kitty. Choosing the same coverage limits, deductible, and reimbursement level, Pets Best returned prices ranging from $15.97 to $19.49.
Overall, Pets Best prices are competitive. But the company stands out for its balance of affordable prices, range of coverage options, and low price for lifetime coverage with no dollar limits.
