Jennifer Lopez's latest album, "This is Me... Now," was released on February 16, after a decade-long hiatus that included her marriage to Ben Affleck. With tracks like "Can't Get Enough" and "Mad in Love," fans of J.Lo's more traditional 2000s R&B sound will be happy to know that this album is indeed a callback to her 2002 release, "This is Me... Then."

Unlike the original, though, this release is accompanied by a narrative-driven musical film, "This is Me... Now: A Love Story." Directed by Dave Meyers and co-written by Lopez herself and Matt Walton, this Amazon MGM Studios release features an all-star cast, including Fat Joe, Post Malone, Trevor Noah, Keke Palmer, Kim Petras and two-time Oscar winner Jane Fonda. As a narrative, the film is inspired by Puerto Rican folklore, where Lopez's modern-day character is trying to find her lover, whom she lost centuries ago due to being from feuding tribes.

Watching the film myself, it became clear that while I had my dinner in front of me, what I really needed was a glass of wine. As a comedy, the film no doubt had its script tweezed, plucked and razored down by Amazon executives to prime every last meme-worthy moment possible. Honestly, most scenes with the all-stars listed above have major talent like Fonda speaking in short-worded catchphrases rather than dialect. What might have been even more off, though, is the CGI, which actually did make me laugh. While some scenes were done well enough, the world looks about as real as a car commercial.

So, would I put this film on in the living room for a friend? Well, if they brought the wine, then yeah. As far as background goes, this film's short one-hour runtime makes it good for a quick pre-game, or as an excuse to just talk about the 2000s all night long. And to be fair, given the state of the world, perhaps it's time we all take cinema a little less seriously. Lopez is clearly off to a great start. I'm kidding with you Jennifer, if we end up on SNL together and this resurfaces, just know after Taylor, you're my hairbrush song too.

I can't sing all the lyrics to some of your old work (IYKYK), but thankfully you fixed that on this new album. Final note: guys, go stream this album โ€” it's got some R&B-inspired bops and it deserves to have more than 14,000 streams. Let's make it 14,000 and three, which coincidentally matches the three stars out of five that I'm giving this film.
