First time plant parent?
If you’re just getting into houseplants & don’t want to cry over a crispy leaf every week, start here. These are a few of my suggestions for forgiving, low-drama plants:
• Snake plant – thrives on neglect. Little water… whatever light. Tons of varieties to collect!
• Pothos – grows fast, super forgiving, and will actually tell you when it’s thirsty. Bonus points, it’s a trailing plant! 😍
• ZZ plant – basically indestructible and great if you’re busy or forgetful… kinda boring though.
• Spider plant – easy, forgiving, and makes little babies you can share. These can even survive in just water!
• Heartleaf philodendron – very chill and very hard to mess up. Another trailing plant with a ton of varieties!
Start with one or two. You don’t need a jungle overnight — trust me. Don’t go crazy with collecting until you figure out which plants work in your space!
Plants I would NOT start with (learn from my mistakes):
• Fiddle leaf fig – dramatic, picky, and will drop leaves just to make a point. Typically pricey too!
• Calatheas – gorgeous but sensitive to light, water, humidity… vibes… everything. Just don’t.
• Maidenhair fern – needs perfect conditions at all times or it gives up. (I only like staghorn and rabbits foot ferns.)
• Alocasias – stunning, but not beginner-friendly and very opinionated. Zero success rate for me.
• Succulents (controversial, I know) – they look easy, but indoor light + overwatering = heartbreak. Keep em outside!
