Activision is planning a fresh branch of Call of Duty after a run of sequels tied to its Modern Warfare and Black Ops lines.
In an interview with The Game Business, Activision chief marketing officer Tyler Bahl said players had been asking for something new despite changes in setting and features across recent entries. The publisher has “already laid the groundwork” for a future title that will begin a new sub-franchise, he said.
Activision has not announced the new game’s name, release window, platforms or developer. Insider Gaming noted that earlier reports pointed to a separate Call of Duty line, but Bahl’s comments do not confirm those rumored details.
Modern Warfare 4 comes first
For now, Activision’s attention is on Modern Warfare 4. Bahl described the game as a more grounded military shooter built in response to player feedback, and said the company is not measuring success against a single sales or player target.
“If people don’t like the game, we’ve missed the mark,” Bahl told The Game Business. He also called Modern Warfare 4 the conclusion of the recent Modern Warfare series, while leaving room for characters and other pieces of it to return in a different form.
Bahl said future Call of Duty games need to offer something “new or better or different.” The newly confirmed sub-franchise is the clearest sign yet of how Activision intends to pursue that shift.
