Baldur's Gate 3 now has a standalone fan campaign built around The Sunless Citadel, the classic third-edition Dungeons & Dragons adventure. Modder Batilfly uploaded version 1 to Nexus Mods on September 18 after roughly six months of solo development.
The project is not an official Larian or Wizards of the Coast expansion. Batilfly describes it as a free, fan-made adaptation created with the Baldur's Gate 3 Toolkit rather than an addition to the base game's main story. The campaign is designed as a short, linear dungeon crawl and supports multiplayer for as many as four people.
That narrower structure matters because several familiar Baldur's Gate 3 systems are not present in the first release. There is no camp system yet. Instead, checkpoint locations provide short- and long-rest potions that can be used in or out of combat.
NPCs can hold full conversations, but the campaign does not currently update a journal or provide quest markers. It also lacks a minimap. Batilfly's workaround is a custom teleport system built around waypoint items at checkpoint tables: players pick up, drop and activate an item to return to town or another location.
Built for a party, with rough edges disclosed
The creator says the campaign is balanced around a full party of four. Solo players are encouraged to control four characters rather than attempt the dungeon with one, while multiplayer groups can fill those roles together.
Batilfly also asks players to read the documentation or watch the accompanying video before starting because the campaign behaves differently from the base game. Installation requires placing the .pak file in BG3 Mod Manager, then launching the custom campaign through the mod setup.
Version 1 arrives with limitations still on the roadmap. A proper camp system and quest tracking are planned, but Batilfly does not give release dates for either. The creator also warns that a solo hobby project of this scale may contain bugs or rough edges and asks players to report places where they become stuck.
Those caveats distinguish the release from a polished commercial expansion, but they also explain its appeal. The mod is a purpose-built adventure rather than a balance tweak or cosmetic pack, and its four-player support gives groups a new dungeon to approach inside Baldur's Gate 3's combat and dialogue framework.
