Final Fantasy XI's free trial no longer expires after 14 days, giving players indefinite access under a revised set of restrictions.
The changes arrived in stages. Square Enix's September update notes raised the trial's job level cap from 50 to 75. The company removed the playtime limit after maintenance later in the month.
What the free trial still limits
Square Enix's current support page says pre-existing trial accounts receive the new specifications. That means players whose original trial period expired can use those accounts again, although Square Enix warns that access may take time to update after maintenance.
The trial is not the full game. It covers areas from the original Final Fantasy XI release, excludes jobs introduced in expansions and limits accounts to three characters. Players also cannot use the auction house, trade with other players or use bazaars, and they face restrictions on gil, delivery features and several public chat channels.
The larger cap therefore offers more room to play without a subscription, but it does not remove the trial's boundaries around expansions, the player economy or communication.
