Anime News Network framed its question by saying only 2.6% of PS5 players had earned Rebirth's Platinum. The interviewer singled out the final three VR boss gauntlets, which demanded nearly 30 minutes of precise play and some luck, as a major reason for the low rate.
Rebirth's difficulty was intentional
Hamaguchi said Rebirth's abundance of content shaped the trophy requirements. The team wanted Platinum hunters to work through that content and perfect it, so the difficulty was deliberate rather than an accidental side effect.
What the developers misjudged was demand. Hamaguchi said they did not expect so many players to pursue the Platinum. He also recalled battle director Teruki Endo reacting to fan feedback with regret about how punishing the requirements had become.
That distinction matters for Revelation. The new target does not mean its optional fights will be stripped of complexity. Instead, Hamaguchi described a different balance between mastery and attrition.
The hardest VR fights are staying
Brutal and legendary VR Combat Simulator battles will return. One planned rule will make roster management part of the challenge: within each set of fights, a character can be used only once. Players will have to decide when to deploy each party member instead of relying on the same strongest lineup throughout.
Hamaguchi said the lesson from Rebirth was to make the battles themselves enjoyable rather than simply difficult. That leaves room for demanding encounters while reducing the odds that the Platinum depends on repeatedly surviving long gauntlets built mainly to wear players down.
The interview does not reveal Revelation's complete trophy list, so it remains unclear which completion requirements will be removed or shortened. The 20% figure is a development target from the director, not a measured result. Still, it gives players a concrete sense of how aggressively Square Enix wants to recalibrate the trilogy finale's endgame.
Positive accounts welcomed FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION's easier Platinum trophy as less punishing, while negative accounts criticized the change for making the achievement worthless and removing competition.
