Final Fantasy VII Revelation will connect the remake trilogy's finale to Advent Children, Before Crisis, Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus, director Naoki Hamaguchi told Anime News Network in an interview at Tokyo Game Show 2026.
Hamaguchi framed those links as the latest stage of a plan running through the whole remake trilogy. Asked whether elements from Dirge of Cerberus would continue into Revelation, he said the team wanted to draw from all of the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII projects. He pointed to Yuffie and the Deepground soldiers in Episode INTERmission as an earlier example.
For Revelation, Hamaguchi named all four works and said the team had added connections to each. The interview does not explain whether those connections take the form of characters, locations, storylines or smaller references. It therefore does not establish that Revelation adapts or retells each project in full, or that players must finish all four before starting the new game.
A finale designed to use the ideas now
Hamaguchi also described Revelation as the conclusion of the remake series. He said the team currently has no plans for another Final Fantasy VII project and does not want developers holding material back for a hypothetical next installment. The immediate goal is to put the ideas the team wants into Revelation and deliver a satisfying ending.
That does not amount to a permanent retirement for this version of Final Fantasy VII. Hamaguchi allowed that fan reaction after release could influence what happens next. For now, however, the project is being built as an ending rather than a bridge to an announced fourth remake game.
The director gave a similar qualification when discussing the Vincent and Sephiroth downloadable content announced for Revelation. He compared those stories to Episode INTERmission, which expanded Yuffie's perspective by showing events outside the main game's viewpoint. The DLC is intended to explore portions of the story that are not shown in the original game or the remake trilogy, not replace Revelation's ending or automatically continue beyond it.
Connections without a required reading list
The compilation strategy fits a broader balancing act Hamaguchi described throughout the interview. The remake trilogy retains the major story beats familiar to players of the 1997 game while using altered perspectives and characters such as Zack to show where the new version diverges.
That makes the four named connections potentially useful to longtime fans, but the interview stops short of defining them. Until Square Enix shows more, the clearest supported claim is that Revelation draws links to those earlier works while remaining the planned conclusion of its own three-game story.
