Build A Rocket Boy, the developer behind MindsEye, has entered administration after another round of layoffs. GamesIndustry.biz reports that the studio directly confirmed Opus Advisory Group is acting as its administrator.
The outlet says a Companies House filing indicated the appointment, although the document itself was not yet available when its report was published. Administration is an insolvency process intended to protect a company from creditor action while an administrator assesses the business and possible outcomes. It is not, by itself, an announcement that the studio has closed or entered liquidation.
The most recent accounts showed steep losses
Build A Rocket Boy's latest available accounts cover the 12 months ended September 30, 2025. GamesIndustry.biz reports that the company recorded a £47.5 million operating loss and a £36.2 million net loss during that period, with £61.8 million owed to creditors at the period's end.
The studio previously raised money from investors including NetEase Games, RedBird Capital Partners and Galaxy Interactive. Directors representing all three firms were removed from the board during summer 2026, according to the report.
Founder Leslie Benzies, a former Rockstar North president, established Build A Rocket Boy in 2016. Its first released game, MindsEye, arrived on June 4, 2025 and was met with negative reviews and poor audience reception. Within weeks, around 300 workers reportedly received notices that their roles were at risk of redundancy.
Layoffs and legal disputes continued into 2026
The IWGB Game Workers union began legal action in October 2025, alleging that Build A Rocket Boy mishandled the redundancy process. GamesIndustry.biz later reported that employees found Teramind monitoring software installed on work computers without prior notice from management; the union subsequently launched a separate case alleging data-privacy violations.
Company leaders connected the monitoring to claims that outside actors were trying to sabotage the studio and MindsEye. Co-CEO Mark Gerhard alleged that a large American company spent more than €1 million on criminal activity against Build A Rocket Boy, but the report notes that he did not provide evidence. The studio repeated a broader allegation of organized espionage and corporate sabotage when it announced more redundancies in March 2026.
Build A Rocket Boy attempted a reset in April with the MindsEye Blacklisted update, which Gerhard called a major step forward for both the game and the studio. A further layoff wave followed in September. The administrator appointment now places the company's finances and future under formal external oversight, but the available reporting does not yet establish whether the studio will be restructured, sold or wound down.
