Rebel Wolves built The Blood of Dawnwalker on a budget of about $40 million, a comparatively compact sum for an open-world role-playing game made over more than four years.
Eurogamer's report says game director and studio co-founder Konrad Tomaszkiewicz disclosed a $40 million budget in an interview with Bloomberg. A separate first-party account now lands in the same range: investor and Rebel Wolves board director Simon Zhu writes that the project received “$40 ish million, the entire budget” at the outset in 2022.
Zhu says providing the money upfront meant Tomaszkiewicz could concentrate on finishing and releasing the game rather than repeatedly worrying about funding. The inspected sources do not break the total into development, marketing or other line items.
One number, two production labels
The disagreement is less about the amount than what the amount represents. Zhu argues, “In Poland, that budget is AAA.” Eurogamer reaches a different editorial judgment, describing Dawnwalker as closer to a double-A production than a modern triple-A blockbuster. The outlet credits the game with ambition and original role-playing ideas while finding its visuals uneven and parts of its world thin or repetitive.
There is also a small but important wrinkle in the record. Eurogamer's September 22 update reported that Zhu had given a precise $45 million figure. The LinkedIn post available on September 26 is marked as edited and instead says “$40 ish million.” Neither the post nor the inspected report explains the revision, so the defensible current figure is approximately $40 million rather than a precise $45 million.
