TIL King Taco started the whole soft taco/taco truck thing in LA back in '75
I have to say, it's about time LA recognized King Taco's actual impact on food culture. People don't realize how much this one spot changed everything - soft tacos, al pastor, the whole taco truck phenomenon. As someone who's worked in restaurants for decades, it's wild to think about how one family business basically created what we now think of as "LA Mexican food." That's real food history right there.
King Taco, the Los Angeles taqueria that popularized soft tacos and al pastor, is poised to become a city-designated historic-cultural site. Founded in 1975 by Raúl and Lupe Martinez, King Taco revolutionized taco culture in L.A. and across the country, introducing soft corn tortillas and various Mexican cuisine varieties. The Cultural Heritage Commission unanimously voted for the designation, recognizing King Taco's significant contributions to the city's cultural, economic, and social history.
