What communities that YOU want to see are missing from Digg?
We're coming up on almost two full weeks since the launch of public beta Digg. It's been so amazing to see so many communities pop up on here. I love how so many of my niche interests are slowly trickling in.
From to , and to to , I want us to have it all in a way that matters most for people who care about those topics. has been a wonderful place where communities have been submitted and curated with care. I highly recommend it. All of this is a wonderful start!
Let me be clear I'm also not in a rush, either. I know content is sparse right now relative to the rest of the internet. I don't mind it. (People have opinions on this. That's fine!) I would rather have communities be founded and developed by people who are motivated to contribute meaningfully over a longer period of time. Quality over quantity!
What I'm looking for:
I want more non-commercial spaces.
I want more digital places to share and discuss things I care about.
I want those spaces to thrive. I want to give my time and focus on those spaces.
Right now, users are allowed to found up to 2 communities. At first I thought that was kind of weird, but then I realized I absolutely love having this limit in place. In my opinion, it's absolutely feature, not a bug. I hope even when they expand the limit, it's kept in a way that prevents spreading a person's intentions too thin. For a public beta, I actually think this steering decision has been the right one.
But... there are still communities I wish would exist right now (maybe some of them already do and I just don't know it yet). I wrote down a list of some that, if thoughtfully made, I'd join in a heartbeat. I wrote these down quickly off the top of my head, then went back and categorized them. Sorry if it's messy 😭 but hopefully it somewhat makes sense:
Lifestyle / Art / Hobbies
Greeting card making, water coloring, ice sculpting, pottery, fashion
Food
meal prepping, meals on a budget, instant pot, fine dining, restaurants, fast food, cheap eats, caffeine
Animals
fish, capybara, shiba ibu, huskies
Accountability
open study sessions
study buddy
public accountability
Travel / Places / Recreation
public transit, cities, undersea exploration, diving
Audio / Sound
headphones
Finance
budgeting, personal finance, retirement, taxes, small business, business finance
Tech
domains, web hosting, UNIX, JMAP, emails, web browsers
If you left me with this for an hour I'm sure I could come up with way more. It's also easy to look at the communities you're in on another site and try to envision what a Digg equivalent would look like. (I didn't do that. My list came straight from my head in 2 minutes). I think that's also a good starting point, but I also caution doing a 1 to 1 mapping over to Digg, since this is also a good opportunity to reimagine what community looks like.
We should think about what being a good steward of a space means here on Digg. (I think is a good example of this, and it also is unique to Digg as far as I know!)
Anyway, even if you don't want to found the community yourself, what kind of places do you want to see here??
Maybe someone will be inspired and go create it! (And don't forget to submit it on so you get a nice certified Digglist Star on the website)
