Civil War-era graves being moved as expansion begins at Mater Dei
Don't make Indiana Catholics choose between football and disturbing the dead.
Mater Dei High School in Evansville, Indiana, is relocating approximately 20 Civil War-era grave sites from Babytown Cemetery to St. Joe Catholic Cemetery as part of its 'Growing in Grace' expansion plan. The expansion includes interior and exterior upgrades, additional parking, and enhanced security. The relocation process, overseen by Funeral Director Gary Pierre, involves careful excavation and respectful handling of any remains or items found. No intact remains have been discovered yet, only casket hardware and ornamental pieces, which will be stored securely until reburial. The project is expected to be completed by the end of March, followed by a ceremony at St. Joe's.
