When it comes to moving somewhere new, more and more Americans are choosing to migrate to a different state. Just under eight million people made an interstate move in 2021, and the number jumped up to 8.2 million in 2022.

To uncover the country's top relocation destinations, StorageCafe analyzed 2021 US Census Bureau data and ranked the states according to which had the highest number of net newcomers per 1,000 residents.

Key Findings:

  • The Mountain West region of the US is particularly appealing for Americans, with almost half of the top ten states for net migration found there.

  • Idaho had the highest net migration rate in the study overall. In 2021, roughly 25 newcomers moved to the state for every 1,000 residents. Of those who moved to Idaho, the majority came from California, Washington and Colorado.

  • Thanks to affordable housing markets and healthy economies, Southern states including South Carolina and Tennessee have also seen high net migration.

  • On the other end of the scale, the states of Alaska, New York, Illinois and California have experienced a significant drop in residents, with each seeing double-digit negative net migration.
