Home to around 336 million people, the US has the third-largest population in the world β€” but how do the country's states compare to the populations of countries across the globe?

Based on figures from the US Census Bureau and Worldometer, the map below shows which of the world's countries each US state most closely resembles when it comes to population size.

Key Findings:

  • Nearly a third of the total US population lives in California, Texas and Florida.

  • The country's most populous state, California, is most similar to Canada, population-wise β€” and if it were a country, it'd have the 38th-largest population in the world.

  • Around 30.5 million people reside in Texas, making it almost the equivalent of Madagascar, which has a population of roughly 30.3 million.

  • The least-populated state is Wyoming, whose population of around 583,000 is most closely matched to Micronesia in the Pacific Ocean, where fewer than 550,000 people live.
