Most of us are aware of the health risks of cigarettes, but the habit has a significant financial cost for individuals and society at large, too. In fact, smoking costs the US more than $600 billion every year, according to the CDC.
To find out where in the country is paying the highest price for smoking, WalletHub looked at the out-of-pocket, financial opportunity, healthcare, income loss and other costs of smoking for every state, and calculated the average total cost per smoker in each. They then ranked the states according to whose smokers cost the most, both per year and over a lifetime.
