The US is a richly diverse place β€” according to 2020 data, there's a more than 60 percent likelihood that two people randomly selected in the country will be of different ethnicities β€” but the level of racial diversity varies wildly from state to state.

Visual Capitalist ranked the US states based on figures from the Census Bureau's Diversity Index, where a score closer to zero percent means represents a more homogenous population, and a score closer to 100 percent means a population is more racially diverse.

Key Findings:

  • Hawaii is the most racially diverse state in the country, with a Diversity Index score of 76 percent. Forty-four percent of marriages are interracial in Hawaii, and the population is 36.5 percent Asian, 21.5 percent white, 10.2 percent Native Hawaiian or Pacific and 9.5 percent Latino or Hispanic overall.

  • California, which scored 69.7 percent, is the second-most diverse US state. Hispanics and Latinos make up 39.4 percent of the population, making them the largest ethnic group in the state.

  • The least racially diverse state of them all is Maine, scoring just 18.5 percent.

  • Since 2010, diversity in America has grown by around six percent.

It seems that this study is mixing race with ethnicity at random. Hispanic is an ethnicity and can be of any race.
