According to the World Health Organization (WHO), roughly one-fifth of the world's population uses tobacco products β€” but the prevalence of tobacco use varies considerably by country and by sex.

Using WHO figures from 2022, Visual Capitalist charted the global tobacco use of people aged 15 years and older, including both smoked and smokeless tobacco products. Countries for which 2022 data was unavailable were not included.

Key Findings:

  • Nigeria has the lowest tobacco use rate of any country in the world (2.9 percent).

  • People in Myanmar and Indonesia are among some of the biggest tobacco users worldwide (43.9 and 38.5 percent of the population, respectively).

  • Men use tobacco products more than women in nearly every country analyzed β€” Andorra and Montenegro are the exceptions.
