A recent study by Lawnstarter compared 300 major US cities on a number of metrics across four main categories β€” pollution, infrastructure, living conditions and resident dissatisfaction β€” to identify which spots across the country are most in need of a clean-up.

Using the ranking, which was based on locations' overall dirtiness scores, Visual Capitalist mapped America's top ten dirtiest cities.

San Bernardino, California, ranks first overall, with a score of 54.90. San Bernardino County is a shipping hub, and is home to severe air pollution thanks to its close proximity to multiple freight and warehouse corridors. The study's fifth-dirtiest city, Ontario (49.02), also belongs to the county.

Making up the rest of the country's five dirtiest cities are Detroit, Michigan (52.89), Reading, Pennsylvania (51.85) and Newark, New Jersey (50.66).

The states of California, Texas and New Jersey are all home to two cities in the top ten ranking each.
