The Cities And States With The Most Solar-Powered Homes For Sale, Ranked
Since 2005, the number of US homes adopting solar power has grown by roughly 32 percent per year, and with good reason: solar panels can save the average homeowner $1,432 on their annual energy costs.
To understand what the market for solar-powered homes looks like across America, MarketWatch used data from Zillow to rank states and cities with a population of at least 100,000 by the number of houses, townhouses, condos or co-ops and apartment listings that included the keyword "solar." They also worked out the number of solar homes per city and state relative to population, as well as which areas are showing the most interest in them online.
Key Findings:
-
Las Vegas is home to the highest number of solar-powered home listings of any city (287). Relative to population, though, Goodyear, Arizona, has the most, with 57.87 on sale for every 100,000 residents.
-
State-wise, California (6,014) and Florida (2,852) have the most Zillow listings for solar homes overall, while Hawaii (23.33) and Nevada (20.27) have the most per 100,000 people.
-
Irvine, California's solar-powered homes get more views than any other city in the US (a median of 2,188). The average solar home listing in New Hampshire attracts 1,799 views, the most of any state.
-
Solar homes in Arkansas carry the highest premium of any state, costing 91.15 percent more than a typical house. The state getting the best deal, on the other hand, is California, where residents face a premium of just 4.13 percent.
