The American public's trust in the media is at its lowest point in six years, according to a recent survey by Gallup. Using Gallup's findings since 1972, Visual Capitalist charted Americans' confidence in the mass media over the decades, and highlighted significant events that have taken place throughout the years.

In 2023, just 32 percent of survey respondents said they trusted the media, either a great deal or a fair amount โ€” the last time this number fell so low was in 2016. The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, and the misinformation and conspiracy theories that flourished along with it, likely had something to do with this drastically increased skepticism.
