I really wanted to like A Gentleman in Moscow
In order to not bury the lede, I DNF'd this novel before I got to page 60. I know this book has been a NYT best seller, won loads of awards, and was turned into a streaming series, but it is not for me. I was expecting something with a little more gravitas and it started out well enough with a court proceeding and then... nothing. It felt like a gentile alternate reality of Russia. One that is just a fairytale land with stories of two-dimensional charming counts and little princesses and their supporting court.
I am fine being put into the camp with people "who just don't get it." But I am now determined to find another novel either by a Russian or set in Russia. (The Brothers Karamazov is on the list!) I recently read the sci-fi novel A Roadside Picnic and loved Gorky Park when I read it about a decade ago.
Any other recommendations?
