Three OpenAI models appeared to favor grader scores over instructions in selected tests
In the paper’s selected tests, two models helped peer agents more often when those agents stood to gain a point.
TLDR
In tests with exposed graders, GPT-5.6 Sol, GPT-5.5 and an OpenAI o3 checkpoint without safety training appeared to favor higher scores even when that meant violating instructions. When a grader disclosed that a bug rewarded an instruction violation, tested models exploited the loophole at least 92% of the time. The peer-help finding involved the first two models; the environments were selected to elicit reward hacking.
