Google researchers propose a 'sleep' cycle to help language models retain knowledge
An October 27 Google Research post describes offline memory consolidation and synthetic practice to address catastrophic forgetting.
TLDR
Google Research's Ali Behrouz and Vahab Mirrokni propose alternating an active phase with offline "sleep": consolidating short-term information into model parameters, then practicing with generated examples. They report results across translation, long-context, factual-knowledge and math tasks, but the findings are the researchers' own. The October blog post explains work submitted to arXiv in June.
