Coyote Filmed on Alcatraz Island for the First Time in History

A coyote has been filmed stepping foot on Alcatraz Island for the first time in documented history, likely from SF’s Coit Tower area, after getting caught up in the bay’s stronger-than-usual current due to recent storms. Aidan Moore, who works for Alcatraz City Cruises, shared videos on Facebook of the coyote swimming to the island. While coyotes are common on nearby Angel Island, this is the first documented sighting on Alcatraz. The coyote came ashore along the southern edge of the island, panting and shivering, before quickly disappearing. It’s unknown if the coyote is still on the island.

Yosemite’s famous ‘firefall’ won’t require reservations in 2026. What to know

This news article from The Fresno Bee explains that Yosemite National Park will not require reservations in 2026 for visitors hoping to see the 'firefall,' a natural phenomenon where Horsetail Fall on El Capitan’s eastern edge glows orange when backlit by sunset. The firefall can be seen from February 10 to February 26, but visitors should prepare for winter conditions and plan for multiple evenings due to the natural conditions required for the effect. Visitors should park in eastern Yosemite Valley and follow park guidelines to protect the natural and cultural resources.

Got 3 minutes? This habit may help boost hope and reduce stress from NPR

A study reveals that watching inspiring videos for 3-5 minutes daily can boost positivity and reduce stress. Researchers found that 'underdog' stories, like that of a cancer survivor climbing Mt. Everest, elicited hope and lower stress levels. While the effects are small, they accumulate over time, suggesting that focusing on positive content can improve well-being. Strategies to enhance your social media feed with positive content include seeding your feed, keeping a media log, and periodically resetting your account.
