Mysterious Stone in US Backyard Turned Out to Be an Archaeological Treasure

A couple in New Orleans found a marble slab in their backyard that turned out to be a 2,000-year-old Roman funerary tablet. The Latin inscription on the stone commemorated a Roman soldier named Sextus Congenius Verus. The tablet was originally part of the collection of the National Archaeological Museum of Civitavecchia, Italy, but was lost during World War II. The tablet was repatriated to the museum after its discovery.

Anthropic says the Department of War's new “contract language” made “virtually no progress” on preventing Claude's use for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons

Anthropic's CEO Dario Amodei discusses the company's proactive deployment of AI models to the Department of War and intelligence community, emphasizing their commitment to national security. Anthropic has been the first to deploy models in classified networks and national laboratories, and has provided custom models for national security customers. However, they maintain safeguards against mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons, citing risks to democratic values and the unreliability of current AI technology. Despite threats from the Department of War to remove Anthropic from their systems and label them a 'supply chain risk,' Anthropic stands by their position and hopes for reconsideration.

How birding really can change the brain and boost cognition, surprising new study finds

A new study published in the Journal of Neuroscience suggests that birding can alter the brain's structure and function, potentially enhancing cognition even as you age. The Canadian study of 58 adults found that expert birders had more dense brain tissue in areas related to attention and perception, which may indicate increased communication between neurons. These structural differences were associated with more accurate bird identification. The study suggests that birding may support brain health in older adults, although it does not prove that birding prevents cognitive decline.
