Halo 3 Co-Op Heads Offline
computerandvideogames.com — While a two-player co-op mode has been confirmed for Halo 3 (player two assumes the role of the Arbiter) it looks like it'll be available in LAN or split-screen only as Bungie struggles to get the mode running over Xbox Live.

Confused O_o
This should be a no brainer, hopefully it gets included eventually or it would be a serious loss (to me atleast).- Nobi-Wan, on 10/11/2007, -19/+2They should have taken a lesson from Gears of War. The option was actually there for Halo 2... it was such a tease and an obvious last-minute cut. I REALLY hope that with all their resources they'll be able to pull it off. I'm going to be very disappointed if they aren't able to do co-op.
- gwolf, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5How bout it wasn't part of the design. Would you like them to delay it for 8 months or do you want it now?
- duffman03, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2I want them to delay it. I want a finished product.
- gwolf, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Well NO you can't have it right now this instant. I realize you aren't used to hearing that word but there it is. Now grow TF up will ya.
- strictnein, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7As Frankie says, the problem they're facing is how to sync between two players who are over a mile away from each other, especially when one of them is driving around a bunch of marines. That's a lot of data that needs to be synced.
- duffman03, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1If the broadband in the US didn't suck it wouldn't be such a huge problem.
- LucidHawk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Crackdown does it no problem and a few other games. One player strays too far from the main player or a player reaches a continue spot then the other player spawns next to them. It's THAT ***** simple.

- decay, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1The Article says nothing about AI....
- HPCELarry, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12The problem has always been getting ai to sync over the net. AI decisions are processed on the local xbox, meaning that an ai might choose to go one way on one box and another way on another box.
- Tiak, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5That and that they're now trying to use up as much of the 360's capabilities as possible, to the point of arbitrarily expanding maps to large sizes when it isn't completely neccessary and incorporating as many independent AI units as possible.
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/11/2007, -19/+2They should have taken a lesson from Gears of War. The option was actually there for Halo 2... it was such a tease and an obvious last-minute cut. - Tygell, on 10/11/2007, -21/+12I will not buy this game if they don't include at LEAST 2 player online co-op. 4 player co-op should have been a given this time around too.
- NeoOfTheSith, on 10/11/2007, -11/+22Cry a little more. A lack of online co-op will not take away any of the fun from the game.
- nreynolds, on 10/11/2007, -1/+21it will take away some, but not enough to make any real person not buy it.
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1Because Halo is so fun!!!
- jeepnut24, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2It most certainly will. CO-OP was a key to the fun of HALO, it was SERIOUSLY lacking online in HAL02 and would be a Terrible mistake to leave it out of HALO 3.
- NeoOfTheSith, on 10/11/2007, -11/+22Cry a little more. A lack of online co-op will not take away any of the fun from the game.
- skankme, on 10/11/2007, -6/+49Uh, the previous installments "teleported" players when the other player got too far ahead of them - and that was LOCAL. Why can't they do that over Live? I would definitely rather deal w/ an annoying random teleport thing than NOT have Live Co-Op. Duh.
- stung47000, on 10/11/2007, -4/+20I agree, but how should the game decide who is the player further ahead? Perhaps in Halo 3 the levels are too open-ended to know for certain?
- Scheissen, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2... You have got to be kidding me.
- duffman03, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It didn't matter. Whichever player left the "zone" the other player would be teleported. Forwards or backwards.
- stung47000, on 10/11/2007, -4/+20I agree, but how should the game decide who is the player further ahead? Perhaps in Halo 3 the levels are too open-ended to know for certain?
- The2ndRunner, on 10/11/2007, -15/+4Don't worry, it'll be available via DLC/micro-transaction.
- jacksons98, on 10/11/2007, -9/+2That was my thought when I read it **might** come thru download later. I kept thinking MS really wants to milk this Halo franchise this time around for all they can get.
- hellboy1975, on 10/11/2007, -5/+42If you actually read the article, they do describe why it's been excluded. It's because of a technical limitation presumably due to the size of the maps.
If this is the case, then comparing it to Gears of War is irrelevant, since GoW had much smaller and more confined levels than (presumably) Halo 3 will.
Personally, as long as Co-op is available offline, then that's good enough for me!- sldSquirrel, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11This isn't "no online co-op confirmed!" either. They said they were struggling to make it work, but they've still got a month or so for development.
- diggrim, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1you do realize that most development has stopped...at least if they expect to do good testing
- hollismb, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4If they can do it local or over a lan, it should be online. There's no explanation I'll buy that will make me believe otherwise, and definitely not this bull-crap 'size of maps' excuse. Keep the players together, you know, just like in Halo 1 or Halo 2.
- strictnein, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1You clearly know a lot about the Internets!
- sldSquirrel, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11This isn't "no online co-op confirmed!" either. They said they were struggling to make it work, but they've still got a month or so for development.
- thomas11126, on 10/11/2007, -13/+2There goes all my launch day plans
- Bartboy919, on 10/11/2007, -13/+3This is a piece of *****, why the hell can't they do this, Gears did it fantastically.
- Buckiller, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9RTFA
- Rfriaz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4RTFC for good measure.
- gwolf, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5So you wont be buying it then; good there is a surplus of whiney 14 year olds playing halo now, one less won't be missed.
- Buckiller, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9RTFA
- halosniper7, on 10/11/2007, -4/+23ok. halo is my favorite game, and it will still be fun without online co-op, But this is the last real halo--online co-op is a must.
- loveddevol, on 10/11/2007, -11/+28in crack down,
you could be minutes away with hardly any problems.
so what gives?- Sornos, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22Because all life in the game fades within 200 feet of the character. There is not AI between characters. In Halo 3, the AI is still interacting in the gaps between players, not so in Crackdown.
- ProfChaosOmega, on 10/11/2007, -9/+2NO.
- oldsk00l, on 10/11/2007, -16/+4After Gears, Bungie's got no excuse. Something tells me Halo 3 will end up not being as good as Gears. Ironic that Epic is outdoing Bungie already and Halo 3 hasn't hit the shelves yet.
Note to MS and Bungie folks - Epic showed you folks up bigtime. Not that you care, or care at all whether it ends up functioning apparently, but it also shows that the Bungie investment only was a shortsighted one. That the technical talent really isn't as talented as a 2nd party dev.- xcheats, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9RTFA
- Tpop01, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7It's a totally different game, you can't even compare the two.
- deici66, on 10/11/2007, -14/+4more like gaylo 3
- soot, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2lol m i rite
- DrunkenSavior, on 10/11/2007, -1/+27Halo maps are huge, and you can often backtrack to the earliest parts of the map from the end. This makes for a lot of data that would have to be sent between players. In Gears of War, the game would section you off between areas. You can not backtrack in Gears of War (that's why the Hammer of Dawn appears conveniently whenever you can use it). That made for smaller amounts to be sent between players.
Just because it's in the same genre (or even a similar genre) doesn't mean that Halo 3 can go online like Gears of War can. There's a whole level of depth some of you are ignoring when it comes to playing games online.- Ocelot13, on 10/11/2007, -10/+2what about crackdown? you could be in totally opposite sides of the city without any problems
- Tpop01, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Because all life in the game fades within 200 feet of the character. There is not AI between characters. In Halo 3, the AI is still interacting in the gaps between players, not so in Crackdown
- Comanche, on 10/11/2007, -7/+3Rainbow 6 Vegas, 4 player co-op. Me and my friends would be all over the freaking map.
If freaking battlefield can work with 16 people, Bungie should be able to do 2.- bj00rn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2AI - NO AI, SP - MP, Map size, and the COMBINATION of all is creating a BANDWITH problem. Co-op is fun, but I don't want Halo 3 compromised and reduced in scope and all ends because of ONE feature. Besides, they still may be able to work it out yet.

- PunkRampant, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I think it really comes down to the developer's decision to create the game with co-op in mind. You can't just slap it on at the end, and Bungie is having difficulty with that.
- Ocelot13, on 10/11/2007, -10/+2what about crackdown? you could be in totally opposite sides of the city without any problems
- PowerMax, on 10/11/2007, -16/+5So..... it's basically Halo 2 with upgraded graphics. Gotcha.
- imikedaman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2And online co-op would have changed that... how? Your premise is wrong anyway.
- reddevil3, on 10/11/2007, -14/+3Am I the only one who isn't that excited about Halo 3? Nobody seemed to really care that it was at E3....
And now there's no online co-op (which people badly wanted for Halo 2). No doubt it'll be a very good game but this is just disappointing... - rude0197, on 10/11/2007, -7/+3maybe post release for a fee $$$
- formulathree, on 10/11/2007, -19/+3
The bad news just continues for the POS 360. Let's recap:
1) 1 Billion dollar warranty coverage
2) Peter moore bails or is fired
3) X07 is cancelled for unknown reasons
4) MGS 4 and FFXIII stay PS3 exclusives
5) Halo 3 multiplayer graphics suck hard
6) Halo 3 co-op taken out- afruff23, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Oh, I'm sorry....I CAN"T HEAR YOU OVER YOUR FAN____BOY!!!!
- IMADV8, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10I fail to see how any of those things lower my enjoyment of all the awesome games on the system.
- formulathree, on 10/11/2007, -11/+2
I fail to see how your Xbox 360 is still working.- Disposition816, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3sheesh! JACKASS!
- gwolf, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Better lock the garbage cans; see this is what happens when you feed the trolls.
- Asahoshi, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14Comparing Halo 3 co-op to Gears of War co-op is the most ignorant thing I ever heard of. Gears of War, while It looked prettier had way smaller maps than that of ANY of the halo series. Also Gears of War has FAR less going on in game than that of Halo.
- Disposition816, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0yeah exactly, Bungie are clearly having problems with large maps with no loading gaps, with enemies all over it. If someone drove a warthog way down one end while the other was near the start it's like two games are going on at once, but it needs to be synced between both (or 4 players if that was so).
- hollismb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Or you could just warp the farther character closer to the 'forward' one. They did this in both other Halo games. Size of maps is irrelevant.

- BobbyMC, on 07/21/2008, -8/+1If Bungie didn't waste time developing offline co op imagine what they could have made better? Apparently they don't realize that if you can't connect to other people, you can't play with them!
- Comanche, on 10/11/2007, -14/+3This just reduced my halo3 excitment by 40%

Hopefully they'll release it as a downloadable feature. I would pay $20 for online co-op because Microsoft needs our help at this time. They've given so much to us and now it's time for us to give back. Who's with me?- Zalyster, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6...
- Disposition816, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2from your comments on this thread it's clear your confused with what your own opinion is, I suggest taking a rest then figure out what kind of fanboy you are.
- mannyg3, on 10/11/2007, -9/+1I'd rather the game be delayed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
even until 2010.
but no later. - IMADV8, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2This wouldn't have even mattered if MS hadn't ***** broken XBC and Xlink Kai by setting the LAN ping limit to 30.
- Sairgem, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4www.computerandvideogames.com
Who? Also, inaccurate. Bungie said they will try to make it online if they could make it work. - DevinOlsen, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Well I'm not going to lie to you.. Halo 1 had NO online Multi-Player; but it did have LAN... Then came XBC and online Halo 1 was born.
I can't help but think that the same will happen will Co-Op... There is LAN co-op which means there is a HUGE possibility for 'XBC Co-Op'. - BLyn, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Yess... dugg for lockout
- Jaysunli, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14The article doesn't state that it isn't coming. It says they are working on it. They did not say it won't be in the game.
Buried as Inaccurate. - cozamonkey, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5UGH! Worst news I've read all week... But at the same time, the best. *sigh* Bungie, you are a fickle one.
- formulathree, on 10/11/2007, -12/+3
Halo 3 has been delayed till 2008. - supaklaw, on 10/11/2007, -9/+5Who the F cares about co-op? The single player levels on H2 sucked raw balls... H3 single is gonna be a little better but nothing touches Halo CE.... they'd be better off re-releasing Halo 1 with co-op and online play. H3 is just gonna be a blazing multi-player extravaganza... screw the co-op. I doubt I'll even finish the single player.
- Flummoxer, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6Wow! You've played Halo 3's campaign? You must work for Bungie!!!!
- Scheissen, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1Seriously, halo 2 sucks. Bungie should have Microsoft release a patch to connect Halo to Xbox Live.
- duffman03, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Then why did people get so whiney about shadowrun not having a single player?
- mypetdinosaur, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8comparing it to gears or crackdown isnt very fair.
halo has much more going on than either of those games or the two previous games in the series. the levels dwarf gears' in size, and the number of enemies (vehicles, too) in a typical encounter outnumbers both games. not to mention the ai is much more advanced than crackdown at least, and probably gears too. sending and syncing all that stuff over a connection isnt exactly an easy task.- gwolf, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Don't want laggy games.
- NoDivision, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16If theres one thing I don't want to do, it's sit in the same room as one of my friends.
- ProtossX, on 10/11/2007, -10/+6Last i checked killzone 2 will have the option to play ONLINE co-op FREE aka no xbox live charge
and it looks light years better then halo3
How is it possible maybe ask sony how they can give you more for less price, why pay for xbox live if you can't even do fps co-op online do you really need a ps3 to be able to do that sheesh- mypetdinosaur, on 10/11/2007, -6/+11last i checked halo > killzone
why should i care about killzone 2 when killzone 1 was a trainwreck? does. not. compute. - formulathree, on 10/11/2007, -8/+3
Last time I checked Forza 2 looked better than Halo 3 - piratearggghhh, on 10/11/2007, -6/+6Please don't compare the sequel to a mediocre game to Halo.
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -7/+5Please don't compare a mediocre game to another mediocre over hyped game.
- butbutz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0sorry to tell you, but halo is a very mediocre game.
- gwolf, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Maybe Halo is mediocre In your lonely opinion. That being the case why exactly are you reading articles about it?
- SuperiorKarsch, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Can't compare Killzone 2 and Halo 3...
Different consoles and genres.
The thing is, every Xbox player wants the game because of the name...
...where Killzone (after the E3 trailer and problems with first) needs a breakthrough.- duffman03, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Has nothing to do with the name. Played the beta and it rocked. And that is only a portion of whats to come.
- gwolf, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Free, is that what you are worried about. Get a job ProtossX and you can play too. As for how it looks, you have no idea what it looks like, no one has seen any real game play. When it's playable we will talk.
- mypetdinosaur, on 10/11/2007, -6/+11last i checked halo > killzone

Hey everyone, is this because the Xbox 360 is not powerful enough to do it?- SharinganBob, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Do you think by making more than 5 posts trolling on this thread, it makes it seem as if anyone supports you?
- formulathree, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2
What's the matter xbot troll? Can't take your own medicine?- Disposition816, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I think your the troll anyone can see that as a fact, if your system is so good go play it and don't worry about your competition.
- gwolf, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1If 360 isn't powerful enough to do it then nothing is. I have yet to see anything from the PS3 that's better done than on the 360. When that happens I will take your assertion seriously, until then all you have is an un-cashed personal promissory note from Sony.
- unclefrank, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1if there is no coop I'm not interested in buying this anymore.
- gwolf, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Until you hear how amazing it is with or without that feature. Remember these words when you're standing in the checkout at Best Buy.
- DMDekoth, on 10/11/2007, -7/+1So.. what? Another feature that other games have successfully accomplished but Halo 3 is unable to achieve?
- strictnein, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2In Flight Simulator X I can fly from New York to London in real time if I want to. Sadly, even though Halo 3 supports flying this appears to be another feature that other games have successfully accomplished but Halo 3 is unable to achieve.
- formulathree, on 10/11/2007, -10/+2
Looks like another feature has been cut - No Online Multiplayer - the lack of dedicated servers just couldn't pull it off.- gwolf, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Who said no on-line multiplayer, please RTFA before you speak.
- evozero, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3Serious Sam for PC did this years ago and it was a blast. Seems like Bungie could of pulled this off.

- Darksoul, on 10/11/2007, -7/+3Sorry but all you people digging us down that are saying have no online co-op is ***** then you all need to face it this is a big let down bungie has known what people have wanted all along they have plenty of time to put it in since this has been known since Halo 2. Sorry but this is a big let down for me everybody and this could hurt their game in the long run. The add in of online co-op in halo 3 would of made the game an even bigger seller then before.
I like all you that are saying that the level size is why they cant that is such ***** if people could do it via gamespy on the original xbox with halo 1 they shure as hell can do it with halo 3 stop finding excuses for their lack of insight.- HolyChimp, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2You're right, Bungie should have focused on the list of things the fans wanted, which was better multiplayer, better campaign, 4 player co op, online co op, better graphics, better physics, better ai, larger levels, better weapons, for it to be like halo ce, for it to be like halo 2, for it to be like neither of them... etc etc etc. online co op is something that would be nice, but i'm not going to cry myself to sleep because it doesn't have it.
And *****, one of my shift buttons broke... my favourite one! - Disposition816, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1not to mention Bungie clearly say they are working on it, at least the game still comes out in september and god willing co-op will be available, free, later.

What's the problem? Online co-op is an option and that's why we bought the 360. We like choices and I choose not to play online Co-Op so this is good. - Asahoshi, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5"Sorry but all you people digging us down that are saying have no online co-op is ***** then you all need to face it this is a big let down bungie has known what people have wanted all along they have plenty of time to put it in since this has been known since Halo 2. You clearly Have no idea how such a co-op would work. Like I said before...Gears of War co-op worked for 2 reasons.
1)smaller scale
2)less data being pushed locally.
Halo co-op would have so much more going on at once on a far larger scale. For online co-op to operate I'd say the max ping you could run is about 30-40. Even then you will run into lag issues. XBL will never be able to push a decent enough ping on a consistent bases with all the random people from various locations on various connection qualities.
Don't even try XBC (if it even works still) you are in for a lag fest. - formulathree, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2
Does this mean that Halo 3 is also defective? - MrKrinkleDude, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3LIVE co-op is a deal maker for me. It's what sold me on Gears and should be available in more and more 360 games, it's why we have LIVE. If it's not in Halo 3, I'd cancel my pre-order and would relegate it to a rental.
- ShogunWarPig, on 10/11/2007, -7/+3And people pay $50 a year for XBL why?

To buy games like pac man and board games.- SonicPower, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2You don't need to pay the $50 fee if you buy stuff. You pay $50/yr to play online.

- ProtossX, on 10/11/2007, -8/+1If this was Metroid Prime 3 for the Nintendo Wii I would have said oh ***** whatever, but if this was a game on the ps3 like killzone 2 or resistance fall of man and it had no online co op PEOPLe Would be bitching left an right, but this is supposively one of the best FPS of all time now i say supposively cuz people like IGN rate it up in the top 20 games of all time, now i dont ***** think so but shouldn't a highly acclaimed FPS such as halo be leading the pack on cutting edge?
all there ***** competition has ONLINE co-op the ps3 online service is ***** free and there games have it there is no ***** excuse at allw hy it should not be there if you can make it co-op with split screen you can make it ***** run online and if you can't you should have planned FROm the start to make sure you could find a way to ***** do it like your competition u dont just s ay oh well tough luck at the last ***** minute for million dollar blockbuster fffs that is rediculous anuyone who is cuttin them slack saying chill out WTF go look at other FPS that have the ***** online co op for free this is just ***** outrageous an fanboys actually defending ***** wha next oh the next halo won't have a single player campaign since we focused on the death match/teambased multiplayer only (ohw ait that was ***** halo 2)
and i did read the article and ur not going to ***** tell me those crappy ass graphics and big maps can't ***** run on multiplayer GO LOOK at ***** resistance fall of man or gears of war they both run CO op online and habve better graphics and huge ass maps too this is no ***** excuse rthis is 2008 and im sick of reading oh well we didnt plan for it NEITEHR did tghe other companies but they got there ass out there an made it ***** happen- Weebs43, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Looks like someone didn't get their Kix for breakfast, eh? Even if I wasn't exhuasted right now I wouldn't bother to comprehend your ramblings. Once you go learn how games, consoles, and the internet actually work then you can talk. Otherwise, GTFO and get back to your PS3 forum.
- duffman03, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3My eyes started to bleed while reading that.

GB2 your fanboy forum. - Scheissen, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1This is stupid. What does Bungie not have that the other games don't have? This is the last Halo game so they should have online co-op. Use the Live money to pay for dedicated servers!
