Xbox Live owners getting content re-licensed to new Xboxes
crunchgear.com — The Consumerist is reporting that Microsoft is making good on re-licensing downloadable content for Xbox 360 owners who got replacement machines. Finally. At issue is the fact that the Xbox Marketplace's content is tied to each Xbox's serial number. When you make a purchase the Marketplace checks your serial number and generates a license.

- NegativeS, on 03/27/2008, -24/+20When I got my Halo 3 edition box I just re-downloaded everything with no problems through my download history tab.
- DevinOlsen, on 03/27/2008, -4/+74Disconnect your Xbox from XBL, then tell me how it goes for you when you try to access/use the downloaded content.
- Justice101, on 03/28/2008, -6/+8It doesn't, I had my XBL account suspended, because of a billing error, and I couldn't play any of my arcade games. It sucked, and is something that needs to be fixed!
- UnknownCzar, on 03/28/2008, -2/+9Microsoft "fixed" it so that content is transferred when they repair a box a while back, or when you call em up and get lucky.
I'm on my third xbox. all the arcade games i downloaded on my first (doom and something else) don't work offline, but all the ones on my second work.
It seems now they are going to be letting anyone relicense the content now. I hope this is true as it is kind of a pain in the ass to not be able to play several games offline. - stubadub, on 03/28/2008, -6/+2These things will work fine when disconnected from live once you re-download everything. At that point the content becomes associated with your new machine. It's a pain in the butt since you have to individually download everything again, but it does work.
- Trykt, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1This is simply not true and I don't know why people keep saying it.
- djphatjive, on 03/28/2008, -4/+2Everyone here is a freaking idiot, Its all right here!!!!!!

As long as it was repaired this will work for EVERYONE!
- NgrHader, on 03/28/2008, -10/+1I had canceled my live account after selling my xbox fora PS3...I didn't know that you can never get your Live account again after 6 months, I bought another 360 and all my content is gone forever! My marketplace points as well!
- HolyChimp, on 03/28/2008, -0/+7You can't cancel your account. It just goes to silver.
- NgrHader, on 03/28/2008, -2/+1weird that you say that, because I can't get my old account back (CanonEOS)...as Microsoft told me so....trust me I wanted my account back

original article - louiebaur, on 03/27/2008, -3/+10Its about time they made good on this
- minoss, on 03/27/2008, -19/+8The fact they weren't was borderline criminal.
- SLockhart, on 03/27/2008, -4/+14No, it wasn't in any way.
- minoss, on 03/28/2008, -5/+6So because their piece of ***** equipment failed its ok for you to lose all the purchases you made? You, no problem with that.
- SLockhart, on 03/28/2008, -2/+4I agree that it was about time MS did this but you were claiming that the way they used to handle it was borderline criminal and that's not true at all.
- minoss, on 03/28/2008, -5/+6So because their piece of ***** equipment failed its ok for you to lose all the purchases you made? You, no problem with that.
- SLockhart, on 03/27/2008, -4/+14No, it wasn't in any way.
- adh3isive, on 03/27/2008, -11/+6How do I do this? Is it possible through xbox.com because I don't want to call customer support. ***** Max...
- Scalpels, on 03/27/2008, -2/+5What do you have against Max? He's always trying to help you the best he can!
- Trykt, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1I actually don't have to talk to Max anymore. I've yelled at support so many times it goes directly to a tech rep. A level 1 tech rep, and 9 times out of 10 a douchebag, but hey at least I don't have to fatfinger a couple of menus for it.
- Scalpels, on 03/27/2008, -2/+5What do you have against Max? He's always trying to help you the best he can!
- cam503, on 03/27/2008, -9/+7At this point I've downloaded TONS of extra songs for Rock Band--on my own Xbox--but currently my hard drive is plugged into my girlfriend's Xbox 360... and yet, the DLC still works.
I thought this was the issue: that the DLC I download using my Gamertag, onto my hard drive, plugged into my 360 - isn't able to be played on a different 360 even if it's my hard drive and I'm logged in with my Gamertag. What's the deal?- DarkShroud, on 03/27/2008, -4/+17If you're not logged in then you can't play/use any of the content. Example: If you download an Xbox original game everyone should be able to play it on the system without being logged in. If you have/had to replace the system people have to log into the Gamertag is was purchased under to play it.
- ahoyhoy, on 03/27/2008, -0/+13The issue is that you can't use that DLC on someone elses Xbox while your not logged onto Xbox Live, even with your own harddrive/gamertag.
- RanmaChan, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1If you are connected to the internet, your ISP is up, you have not moved to someplace with dialup internet, XBox Live is up, and you have no children/brothers/spouses/friends who want to play the games tied to your account... then you are set without this long overdue fix. Yes. Of course if any of the previous don't apply, say you want to play a game your son downloaded or your Cable Company decided to take the night off... then you can't play any games since they can't verify you are you. With the fix, the content is tied to the machine, so you can play your sons game, and you can play Oblivion the week after Christmas (XBox live was pretty much gone that week for me.)
- justice7, on 03/29/2008, -1/+1girls don't own 360's, inaccurate.
14 year old boys do, perhaps you're mistaken.
- skillfull, on 03/27/2008, -12/+3it would call it a scam ...
- negativefx, on 03/28/2008, -0/+8it puts the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again
- weeman43302, on 03/27/2008, -6/+4Does anyone else have the problem of your gamertag not automatically logging in when you start the xbox? It used to on my old one but it won't since i got it replaced. Does anyone know of a fix?
- cam503, on 03/27/2008, -0/+19Sign in with whatever Gamertag you want to automatically sign in whenever you turn on your Xbox. From the Xbox Dashboard, go all the way up until your Gamercard is selected. Press A to view your profile and go down to "Auto Sign-In" and set Xbox LIVE to "Enabled." From here on out, whenever you start up your console, you should be automatically signed in.
- slightlyoffbeat, on 03/27/2008, -1/+4hey, this has been driving me crazy! thanks.
- xino, on 03/28/2008, -0/+3If anyone does account recovery with another account on your system after you have "auto sign-in" setup, you might have to do it again.
- weeman43302, on 03/28/2008, -1/+2Thank you. I have been wondering since I got my new xbox back.
- slightlyoffbeat, on 03/27/2008, -1/+4hey, this has been driving me crazy! thanks.
- Thorpe, on 03/28/2008, -0/+7As cam503 said. Thing is, the "Personal Settings" seem to be tied to the console's own memory, hence why the option was probably not set to auto sign-in anymore.

- liquidmetalband, on 03/27/2008, -3/+11That's a very good idea, but you can see why they didn't originally.
It would be oh-so-easy to log in on someone else's XBOX and let them have all your paid content for free.- RudeTurnip, on 03/27/2008, -8/+6Ah, so their excuse is that they assume all their customers are criminals...makes perfect sense now.
- MaverickAlex, on 03/28/2008, -5/+1You bought a Microsoft product, of course your a criminal.
- crashingechelon, on 03/28/2008, -2/+7Well that's what Sony does for the PS3, they allow you to put your purchased content on up to 5 different consoles. So I don't see why MS won't do something similar for Xbox.
- MaverickAlex, on 03/28/2008, -4/+1But that would be stealing, MS is all about the DRM.
- ExRe, on 03/28/2008, -0/+4But still, it wouldn't take a lot of work to stop people from doing that. Just make it so that it records the gamertag the content was purchased with, then, when the content is moved over it records a deactivation for it to happen on the XBL servers for all other xboxs when they connect to XBL the next time.
It's still possible then if somebody would connect to XBL once with a different account and never connect again, but those people can sit offline for the rest of their lives and play the content they "stole" for the rest of their lives for all I care.
- RudeTurnip, on 03/27/2008, -8/+6Ah, so their excuse is that they assume all their customers are criminals...makes perfect sense now.
- smashingmonkey, on 03/27/2008, -9/+4I still have to re-download Puzzle Quest each time I want to play it. Very annoying.
- ahoyhoy, on 03/27/2008, -0/+5That's a strange bug, seems pretty unique and would report it.
- smashingmonkey, on 03/28/2008, -2/+2It's actually not too unique...

- smashingmonkey, on 03/28/2008, -2/+2It's actually not too unique...
- Thorpe, on 03/28/2008, -2/+2Very weird. Why, though? You download it, play it just like you normally would - just have to be connected to Xbox LIVE with the gamertag you used to download it with.
- smashingmonkey, on 03/28/2008, -2/+4I bought the game on an Xbox which went three-red on me and with the new one, I have to download the game to unlock it every single time I want to play.
Strange that I'm getting dug down for an honest and relevant comment.- MaverickAlex, on 03/28/2008, -3/+1Its not that I don't like you being honest, Its just that I don't care.
- Trykt, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2Do not bury this man, he speaks truth. Certain games have ***** up licensing and I've been trying to explain this ***** to xbox live support for over a month now. Streets of Rage 2 does the exact same thing. SoR2 and PuzzleQuest are the only two games I personally own that do this (I own well over a dozen more) but it would not surprise me if there were others.
It's so ***** up, it looks like the game is unlocked on the dashboard. Then when you try to play it all the trial ***** shows up. If you choose to redownload the game while it's running it will "unlock" it for that play session ONLY (redownloading from the dashboard has no effect). This is a retarded ***** workaround that should not be necessary. Having to be logged in to XBL to play the content from my previous Xbox is something I disagree with but can deal with. The fact that the licensing for certain games doesn't even work correctly is unacceptable.
- ahoyhoy, on 03/27/2008, -0/+5That's a strange bug, seems pretty unique and would report it.
- mewoot10, on 03/27/2008, -9/+2Possibly the first moral win for Microsoft? Doesn't make up however for their past.
- MackPrime, on 03/27/2008, -1/+10what about extending the warranty or giving away undertow?
- supermanred, on 03/28/2008, -1/+8Microsoft has done nothing but good with their Xbox and Xbox Live. I don't know what you're talking about. When the boxes failed, they extended the warranty by a few years and replaced them all for free, shipping included.
- MaverickAlex, on 03/28/2008, -3/+1Why didn't they just make a product that doesn't fail every 6 months. It was either replace all the broken ones or face a class action law suit.
- Petrarch1603, on 03/27/2008, -6/+7blogspam, instead how about let's link to the consumerist article?
- supermanred, on 03/28/2008, -8/+3Why don't you submit the consumerist article instead of bitching?
- Abominous, on 03/27/2008, -3/+3Good, now I can play Double Dragon HD again.
- Thorpe, on 03/28/2008, -0/+3You can play it so long as you download it using the gamertag you originally downloaded it for. Just have to be connected to Xbox LIVE to play the full version with your gamertag.
- FatCake, on 03/27/2008, -13/+3Thats cool and all...But when are we getting that free game that we were promised?
- Goblin, on 03/27/2008, -0/+15If you mean for the outages over Christmas, you missed it. They allowed a free download of Undertow a couple of months back as compensation for that.
- zoom1928, on 03/28/2008, -6/+1Good point. It sucks that they didn't honor their promise.
- jstearns, on 03/28/2008, -2/+3Yeah, you totally missed out on it. It was in the first or second week of January. The game was meh though, anyway.
- Yarnage, on 03/27/2008, -10/+3I don't understand this issue at all. I purchased a 120GB hard drive so I ended up downloading quite a few games and videos. When my XBox died, I sent it to Microsoft. When I got the replacement XBox (it had a different serial number), I hooked up my hard drive and was able to play my games and content still. Why are people having this problem when I didn't?
- heretrix, on 03/27/2008, -6/+2Same here. My 360 RROD'ed, but since I had a replacement plan I just went to the store and swiped my broken one for a brand new unit. they let me switch the HD and everything was good. And that was last July. I never had a problem with my old content. The only explanation is:
A. Dumbasses sent in their HD when they didn't have to and lost everything
B. The HD died.
Other than that I don't see the issue either.- ahoyhoy, on 03/27/2008, -1/+11Try disconnecting from Xbox Live and trying again.
- Scienceisfun, on 03/28/2008, -1/+3Any Xbox can play DLC tied to your gamertag off your hard drive, if you are logged in to Live. It's only an issue if you aren't connected to Live continuously. It's not an issue for most people, but there are cases when it comes up. An example might be if you take your Xbox to a friend's house, or your family's lake cabin, where there might not be internet connectivity. Your original Xbox would have had offline access to the DLC because the serial number matched, but that wouldn't have been the case with a replacement Xbox, prior to this announcement.
- supermanred, on 03/28/2008, -3/+1As far as I know I've been able to bring my HDD to someone else's house and play everything on it there, though I had to login with my gamertag of course....why the ***** wouldnt I use my gamertag when Im kicking ass and chewing bubble gum?
- Yarnage, on 03/28/2008, -1/+1Ah thanks for the clerification. I never tried it offline.
- FoxOrian, on 03/28/2008, -3/+2Man, 120GB still seems so overkill for the 360...
If I could freely load media onto it, then it'd be a great expansion.
I have an Elite, and I've barely filled up a couple percent of the HD...- supermanred, on 03/28/2008, -0/+4Why would you want to load media onto it if it can stream mostly everything, including divx from a networked PC or Mac?
I stream movies from my macbook wirelessly to the 360, works nice.
As far as music, I just plug in my iPod and have access to all my tunes.
If you really want to put the music onto your xbox 360, you can just stick in a store bought cd or a mixed cd and it will "rip" it onto your xbox 360.- InsaneMachine, on 03/28/2008, -2/+3So you don't have to have the PC on as well?
- supermanred, on 03/28/2008, -0/+4Why would you want to load media onto it if it can stream mostly everything, including divx from a networked PC or Mac?

I never had a problem with my old content. The only explanation is:
- heretrix, on 03/27/2008, -1/+13Now they need to stop raping people over the HD prices. Maybe then I'll get the 120.
- ExRe, on 03/28/2008, -1/+5What they really should do is allow consumers to put in their own hard drives. Hell, I could put in a 500GB drive for less than a 120 from them.
- MaverickAlex, on 03/28/2008, -3/+2But then would they make any money?
- ExRe, on 03/28/2008, -1/+5What they really should do is allow consumers to put in their own hard drives. Hell, I could put in a 500GB drive for less than a 120 from them.
- grimeygutter, on 03/27/2008, -0/+6I've complained about this a bunch so I thought I would comment. I can finally play all my arcade games and content again. I called once and told them about my stuff not working on most of my gamertags and they took some info and told me it would be about a month. 40ish days later I got a call telling me to go through my download history to re-download and it all works again. I'm happy enough because honestly thought I was getting blown off by customer support. Too bad the process wasn't quicker though.
- Anagrama, on 03/27/2008, -5/+30My first 360 died in Nov '07. After I got my replacement around Christmas time, I began calling customer service weekly about this problem. in Feb, I was told by the rep (with the supervisor on the line as well that I had to either "purchase the content again" or "just deal with it."
The next day I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, and 4 days after that, Microsoft called me up, apologized for the "inconvenience," and told me that I was king.
It's amazing how these things work.- cannonball, on 03/27/2008, -3/+10Your a true inspiration for putting a monopoly in its place.
- louiedog, on 03/28/2008, -0/+6Microsoft gaming division is not a monopoly.
- ExRe, on 03/28/2008, -4/+5Somehow that story just sounds like BS. If all you had to do was file a complaint with the BBB things would be so much better.
- Anagrama, on 03/28/2008, -4/+4Yeah, I like to make up random stories just to make myself sound "cool." You caught me.
The internet has hastened humanities cynicism. - cannonball, on 03/29/2008, -0/+1Have you ever tried doing that? I think a lot of times it works.
- Anagrama, on 03/28/2008, -4/+4Yeah, I like to make up random stories just to make myself sound "cool." You caught me.
- cannonball, on 03/27/2008, -3/+10Your a true inspiration for putting a monopoly in its place.
- chonuts, on 03/27/2008, -4/+5Just for the record, Microsoft re-licenses your replacement Xbox before they ship it back to you as part of their extended warranty agreement. The author of the original article even admits that Major Nelson (the administrator for Microsoft's official Xbox Live blog) "told me that this should have happened with my unit but did not," which indicates that it was simply a screw-up on Microsoft's part, and not a company-wide scandal. It really sucks for that guy, but Microsoft has been keeping up their end of the bargain (for the most part).
I just received my repaired Xbox this afternoon. As it stands now, I can still access all of my downloaded content without any problems (even without a connection to Live).- LocoMonkey, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1I got mine back 2 weeks ago and only 3 out of the 14 games I have work offline. I guess they still have some work to do. I called them last week about it and they said it would take 30 days for a supervisor to call me back.
- BigBroMario, on 03/27/2008, -2/+1That's really nice to know they're doing this now.
Sort of unrelated, but when my friend had his Wii stolen, Nintendo was very nice about transferring his store account over to his replacement Wii so he could re-download all of his purchased VC games. - AnthonyC, on 03/27/2008, -0/+5Is there any way to get a new 360 relicensed, for example, if I was to upgrade to a newer Elite from my current launch box? I would definitely upgrade if I could get the downloaded content moved.
- HangoverBoy, on 03/31/2008, -1/+0My launch 360 died, and I had a best buy warranty. I took it in, replaced it for an Elite (paid the difference in cost), but I could not keep my old harddrive.
I took my new Elite home, recovered my gamertag and was able to redownload anything I had lost. now, I'm not positive that it needs a constant connection to Live in order to play downloaded games, but I got them back and played them with no problem.

- endlessoul, on 03/27/2008, -0/+9So... when can we get re-licensed? Can we just Download Again and have everything fixed, or will it be rolled out in an update?
The article(s) are slim on details.- supermanred, on 03/28/2008, -5/+2I want my avatar back.
:)- endlessoul, on 03/28/2008, -1/+1Hur, hur, buddy.

- HumanRecall, on 03/28/2008, -2/+5Does this include the transfer content from say an old Xbox 360 to an Xbox 360 Elite ? Real ***** off i can't have access to my Arcade Content i paid for unless i'm Online
- giddieon, on 03/28/2008, -14/+6To late I was tired of having to get my system replaced only to have it die again...
360 is a ***** product and people need to admit they bought lemons... - Thorpe, on 03/28/2008, -1/+4This was a real pain in the ass when I was playing Crackdown offline (downloaded the pack). It apparently said data was corrupt because of the pack not being active. Of course, connecting back to Xbox LIVE soon sorted the problem but it kinda stumped me at first.
Even free stuff sometimes is tied to the console, which I wouldn't have thought was needed.- HangoverBoy, on 03/31/2008, -0/+0Unfortunately, even free stuff is bound by the same license everything else is. Free doesn't mean freeware :(
- BlackTye, on 03/28/2008, -6/+4I heard about this back in August from Tim Wilsie on the Commander Tim Cast.
Link if you don't believe me: http://www.commandertim.com/?p=119#top3- Trykt, on 03/28/2008, -2/+2I listened to this and commander tim is not even talking about the same thing. I mean, it's related, I can see the confusion, but he's totally not talking about the same problem.
To save people the listen, he says to just go to your download history in the account management section of your dashboard and redownload the full game there to get your license back. I have tried this multiple times (it's the first thing xbox support had me do) to no avail.
- Trykt, on 03/28/2008, -2/+2I listened to this and commander tim is not even talking about the same thing. I mean, it's related, I can see the confusion, but he's totally not talking about the same problem.
- JointVenture, on 03/28/2008, -4/+1Great news, I went to play Rez after replacing my 360 at best buy and was surprised to see DOWNLOAD FULL VERSION in the menu.
I was dreading the fact that I would have to call them, this saves me that call.
Maybe Digg isnt as broke as I thought it was.
...now lets get back to talking about having dinner with Obama! doh - shadowspawn, on 03/28/2008, -9/+2why does anyone even run a legit xbox? you want online play, go to a pc. you want a console, go to a console. sheesh, i've never had a problem with any of my xbox consoles, because there is no need to use it online.
- Memnochxx, on 03/28/2008, -0/+3What do I do if I want to play with my friends (in the room with me) and go online?
- fatTJ, on 03/28/2008, -0/+4Live is the best feature of 360... Thats the only reason they outsold Ps3's until more recently
- Trykt, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1PC Elitists go die in a fire. Lots of people enjoy gaming on multiple platforms for many different reasons. You being a goddamn snob doesn't help a thing.
- brocknation, on 03/28/2008, -3/+0this is true! Owning my 2nd (working) XBOX 360, XBOX LIVE remembered my previous purchases and allowed me to re-download the item! Sweet! Now get Marvel vs. Capcom 2 working! Please!
- Synthesize, on 03/28/2008, -1/+3My Xbox 360 Elite died a month ago so this is good news when I get a new console back.
- MacDevyn, on 03/28/2008, -2/+1I'm actually surprised, i thought Microsoft would just let this one slide and hope we all forgot. I'm both pleased and upset this too so long...
- PedleZelnip, on 03/28/2008, -1/+9Does anybody notice that this article is actually completely misleading: nothing's changed, you could always call up customer support and argue with them to try and get the content transferred over. This is nothing new, so nothing's changed. The point is that doing so is an extreme hassle.
For that matter, if it's a result of a getting a refurbished console back, you can do this procedure yourself:
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/systemuse/xbox36 ...
The problem is for people like me who bought new consoles and have wives who want to play previously purchased content. That still doesn't work, even if you call them up and argue with the CS rep.- talkingwires, on 03/28/2008, -1/+2No, the way the procedure used to work was this: if you sent your Xbox to MS for repairs, you had to call them, and they'd credit your Live account with Points equal to what you'd paid for your games and content. It was a workaround, I guess, but if you wanted you could download different games.
Me, I had an extended warranty from Best Buy, so I just exchanged my dead Xbox there. It was quicker than getting a repair, but trying to get my content back in that situation was a ~lot~ of fun. It involved many phone calls and several faxes of documents proving that I had First, owned the original system; Second, exchanged it; and Third, was the current owner of the new system. Hopefully the new procedure will smooth over this process as well.

- mrbrianxyz, on 03/28/2008, -3/+2ifs its true, maybe i'll start buying content again. ... That is when my xbox is done getting its 4th repair
- crashingechelon, on 03/28/2008, -1/+6Maybe they'll address this in the Spring/Summer '08 update. They really need a tab for your account management to let you re-license your system yourself. I've though that they should try a method similar to how iTunes works, that you can add up to 5 consoles to your gamertag so that you wouldn't have to worry about anything like this happening.
- RanmaChan, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1But then I would add my Cousin's and Brother's 360 to my gamer tag and they would add mine to theirs... and we would all share games. That is what they are trying to prevent. Of course we all swap the $60 games around... so it actually wouldn't be unreasonable to share $5 games, but that is DRM for you.

- hojo05, on 03/28/2008, -7/+1Maybe Microsoft should worry about making a system that you don't have to send in every 3 months for a refurb. How about that? That's why I only have a PC for gaming. Besides, Valve didn't make CS:S for PS3 or Xbox 360, so there is no reason for me to buy one.
- Memnochxx, on 03/28/2008, -0/+4That's cool, but I enjoy playing games with my friends. You continue playing in a dark room with your internet buddies.
- Myztry, on 03/28/2008, -6/+1And so they should. The situation is due to Microsoft's ineptness. It would be unreasonable for them to expect people to re-purchase content they already have rights too. The value is solely in the license and not the distribution medium, right?
It's quite good this has come up, as it sets a precedent for people transferring their content (where feasible) to the next generation of devices that are live compatible. This should hopefully cull some of the double jeopardy sales that will be attempted when the platform is replaced. - exomni, on 03/28/2008, -3/+4About damn time. It's definitely still not easy enough, though.
- fatTJ, on 03/28/2008, -2/+1They've been getting better. I just got my 360 back from repair (for the 2nd time), and they gave me a free month of live. So now i can put an extra $5 towards GTA IV
- nickj6282, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2I recently got my license content transferred. They told me it would take 30 days. I wasn't hopeful but lo and behold, on day 29 the transfer went through and it all started working.
- LordStandley, on 03/28/2008, -6/+3Just go into your download history and re-download the header.
- jdhammer, on 03/28/2008, -7/+2Too late Microsoft. I sold my 360 a month ago and now have a PS3. Couldn't be happier. Won't even look twice at a 360 ever again.
- masgaster, on 03/28/2008, -2/+4They told me to repurchase my games if I want to play them offline.
- Trykt, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2Don't bury this guy, I've heard this from multiple techs. I called ***** because even if I wanted to explore this would-be unfair practice I cannot, as the Xbox dashboard recognizes that I've purchased the game before from my gamertag and only gives me the option to redownload the game. It is not possible for me to purchases it more than once from the same gamertag.
I mean, I guess I could use a different gamertag and buy the game again to get it on that particular console, but...seriously? Just...seriously?

- cultist667, on 03/28/2008, -3/+1Keep buying crap from MS and keep getting shafted the xbox 360 is a failure. I won't trust that machine too last a week after I pay and download a bunch of stuff onto it.
- mrSimon, on 03/28/2008, -1/+3Got my xbox on launch, Winter 05. Got the RROD Summer 06. Had the DRM issue with all my content.
Tried the "account management -> download again" technique a year ago, didn't work.
Tried the "account management -> download again" technique last night, didn't work. - BillDoE, on 03/28/2008, -3/+1This is still *****. Why should I have have to re-download hundreds of items and waste my time and bandwidth for MS's problems?
- lipak, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2I'm on my sixth Xbox 360 (I swear I'm gentle). I only bought one Live Arcade game, so after spending so many hours on the phone getting the console replaced; I felt that spending the money for the one game was a better use of my resources than getting back on the phone. However, the most recent time the 360 died I was determined that I wasn't going to re-purchase any more content (by now I had purchased more items - Foolish? Perhaps). I was shocked at how most of the representatives I dealt with couldn't grasp what I was asking for. They would tell me to just download the content again - so I would while I had them on the phone to illustrate the issue. If I wasn't signed in as the gamertag that purchased the content the content acted as though I didn't own it. After some more phone calls back and forth I was told that they would re-license the content but they couldn't give me a time line. Three months past from the last conversation and I received a phone call this past Sunday. The representative told me that my content was re-licensed and I just needed to follow 5 steps to download my content again (via download history). I followed them and I finally had all my content back and working. Needless to say, I am far too patient.
- Trykt, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Xbox support is useless. They have flat-out lied to me on multiple occasions.
When I was trying to get my issue with Puzzle Quest/Streets of Rage 2 resolved the supervisor I talked to told me he was going to recover my gamertag to reproduce the issue and escalate it. He never did so, and they have no record of him saying that. I was later told it is not their policy to recover gamertags as part of a diagnostic unless it is specifically to deal with an account/gamertag issue so they refuse to do it now to see what I am talking about.
On a separate occasion when I had my replacement console die on me within 3 days of receiving it I was told I would be getting a brand new console, not a refurbished replacement unit. This of course did not happen despite the multiple assurances the guy gave me (it sounded pretty incredible to me at the time) and when I asked about it later they had no record of that action being taken and they said it was not their policy to do that anyway.

- masgaster, on 03/28/2008, -0/+3Does this help those who upgraded from Core to Pro or from Pro to Elite, or will this only benefit warranty repairs? Has ANYONE been able to transfer a license to an upgraded system as opposed to a warranty repair?
- Trykt, on 03/28/2008, -0/+3No, I bought an Arcade while my system took a month and a half (no hyperbole here, they actually lost my system during the repair process) to get repaired/replaced (they say they do both but I've only had experience with the latter).
They flat out refuse to do a license transfer to my Arcade system and say they will only do so for my replacement system. They offer no explanation for why they refuse to do this other than it is policy.
They really need to have a system in place where you can designate a "home" console that your licenses are on if they want to continue with this DRM model. Preferably one that's fairly painless but requires validation from the owner of the Gamertag transferring the licenses.

- bouche, on 03/28/2008, -2/+1uh.... this doesn't make any sense and is totally inaccurate. my xbox was stolen 2 months ago and I purchased a replacement. I logged into xbox live and I was able to redownload all of the content I had purchased through my account.
how is this news today???- Trykt, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2You don't understand the problem or the article. Have a nice day.
- masgaster, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2Turn your xbox off, unplug the ethernet cable, turn it back on and try to play arcade games.
or alternatively
Create a new account as if you were a guest and try to play arcade games.
You should be able to understand the problem now.
- Ch1ll1ng, on 03/28/2008, -2/+1sh!t if you had this problem with your ps3 all you'd have to do is log back in and redownload your stuff.
