- MewTwo, on 01/23/2008, -13/+116Just give him a new model already, he bought an extended warranty. You ***** up and sold him a piece of *****, make up for it. If you don't want to replace peoples' boxes than don't offer a warranty.
- markmeinteil, on 01/23/2008, -26/+78Before I bought my PS3, I was very much "on the fence" whether or not to buy an Xbox 360. Ultimately, the Blu-ray drive and the PS3's excellent reliability track record put me in Sony's playground.
If (and that's a big, BIG if) the 360 never had all the rampant RROD issues, I would have bought one for sure.
BTW: The PS3 has been awesome to me so far! I don't regret the purchase one bit! The Wii gets no love since the PS3 came along. May still buy a 360 ONCE they truly fix all their hardware problems. - smacksaw, on 01/23/2008, -8/+49Nothing against the 360 - I want one someday. But damn. They gotta fix this garbage. The way they are trying to take care of the customer is very typically Microsoft. It's funny, after all of my study and field experience as a Microsoft-certified solutions monkey, the greatest lessons I have learned is to have Linux on every PC I own and I didn't buy XBOX or 360.
This story doesn't shock me. What sucks is when they do it to a customer on a massive scale, like foisting software on companies that is dangerously insecure. This is just a game system folks... - MasterPlayer, on 01/23/2008, -4/+41This is unacceptable that this is still occurring and people are putting up with it.
- Frostman3D, on 01/23/2008, -9/+43I love my 360 I got one of them about a year after release, I got the Ring of Death about a year ago, sent it in, they fixed it, no real problems ever since except for Xbox Live.
The main thing that bothers me about it now is how freakin' loud it is. - HenvY, on 01/23/2008, -8/+32Why can't Microsoft do what Sony do? When my PS3 broke(which is very rare), Sony swapped it the NEXT DAY for a BRAND NEW console. I could have deliberately smashed it to bits for all they knew, but that was good customer service.
- inactive, on 01/23/2008, -1/+23They don't repair the same console then send it back to the same guy. They have a constant flow of inventory. One comes in for repairs, they ship another one out that has already been repaired. This guy should have looked on the back of his 360 at the console numbers to realize it isn't the same console each time.

- AvidPreatorian, on 01/23/2008, -6/+28i say try a PS3 at least, i've got both and the system is really great. dont let online communities make up your mind for you. ps3 has gotten a lot of crap for weak 1st year sales but it's simply a better system. if it had more games (which are coming and soon) there would be no competition.
- charlescheese, on 01/23/2008, -9/+30Same thing happened to me. I bought a Wii on launch day (could have bought a PS3 or both if I wanted) and played the hell out of the Wii for about 2-3 months. At that point the novelty of the controls had completely worn off ,and was sick of how awful all the games looked on my HDTV and decided to get either the 360 or the PS3.
I went with the PS3 because it had wifi, HDMI (at the time the 360 didn't have HDMI) free online, it was reliable, and BluRay. Killed a lot of birds with one stone. After I bought my PS3 I played the Wii for about 10 hours total, and that was when Super Mario Galaxy came out. So the Wii had been off for literally eight months or so. After 10 hours of that game and shaking my hand non stop to spin, I sold the Wii for a nice profit and bought a bunch of PS3 games over the past couple months. True story. - Blazers, on 01/23/2008, -2/+21Mine has broken 5 times as well! I had to buy two warranties from bestbuy, because after 3 replacements your no longer covered!!!! It's soo messed up, because I've had it since December 2005 and I've gone through soo many! send me some free stuff or I'm getting a PS3!
- chris9902, on 01/23/2008, -3/+21That's BS. I've defended the Xbox but I'm now on my 4th. It's a ***** piece of ***** and Microsoft just won't send you a new one. I've had the same Xbox rebuilt 3 times. The third time it came back to me I think Microsoft did something to the fan to cool it down but it sounded like a helicopter flying inside (about 4x louder than normal). I'm currently waiting for it to come back...
- migitalwarfare, on 01/23/2008, -0/+18the difference is that a 360, PS3, and DVRs are all essentially computers in fancy cases. CD players, DVD players, cable boxes, and AV receivers perform single functions, none of which require heavy processor loads, and don't put off nearly as much heat as a computer, and therefore, don't require as much ventilation.
treat your game systems like you would a computer tower, and you won't run into heat issues. it's that simple - inactive, on 01/23/2008, -5/+20Ever read Best Buy's extended warranty?
I got screwed by that for my xbox360. I bought mine in the end of 2006, paid almost 150$ for an instant replacement warranty because I knew it was going to break and I got kids, waiting a month is not an option.
The first time it broke (less than 30 days), they replaced it.
The second time it broke (about 4 months after I got the replacement), they told me the warranty was only for the first model. I paid 150$ for one single replacement. Now all they could do was give me a reference number and they would pay for the microsoft repair. And it took a week just to get the box and another three weeks to get the xbox back.
It broke. Same thing happened but this time, by the time microsoft sent me back the box, I bought an entire modding kit because I'm tired of that piece of crap. I put the xbox in a modded case with an external harddrive, a better power supply, a better dvd drive and a SILENT fan that actually works. Never had any problems since, my warranty is void, but I don't need it anymore. Replacing any of those parts is less expensive than getting it repaired. - mywhitenoise, on 01/23/2008, -8/+22There's always an excuse. Most people know that the 360 overheats and have it well ventilated, the thing is, YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE TO. Why the hell should I have my PS3 or 360 out in the open, when all my previous consoles, CD players, DVD players, cable boxes, AV receivers, and every other electronic did just fine sitting in an entertainment center?
- Scienceisfun, on 01/23/2008, -4/+17But 0.243% is 2 people out of 1000. Out of 10 million Xbox 360 owners, that means that this kind of thing could reasonably happen to 2000 people, presuming that these people aren't so fed up with their 360 after the second or third failure. If they had a reasonable failure rate like 5%, a 5-time failure would be a 1 in 3.2 million chance. That is statistically unlikely. 2 out of 1000 isn't statistically unlikely at all at this volume.
- Zamfir, on 01/23/2008, -2/+14They are very quiet.
- revjustin2, on 01/23/2008, -1/+13This is a little off topic, but relevant in that it may reveal the underlying situation:
I used to work for a popular audio hardware manufacturer. One day, they bought up a *****-load of ribbon cables at a very, very low price from a questionable supplier, but, hey, -it's just ribbon connectors, right? These ribbon cables were used extensively in almost every product they built and since they company wanted to sell pro-level gear at consumer level prices, this very large batch of cheapo ribbon cables was instrumental in getting thousands of units out the doors and onto the showroom floor of Guitar Centers everywhere. The problem was that these cables were unreliable and caused thousands of documented instances of failure. The company, which had a very liberal warranty policy, took most of these units back and fixed them for free (or replaced them depending on the situation). The issue was that they fixed them using parts from the same mega-batch of cables that were causing the problems to begin with. Hence, they would see the same unit come back 3,4,5 times for the same issue. Even though the company knew that the cables were bunk, they continued to use them because they bottom line was that they had millions of dollars wrapped up in this inventory. It was cheaper to keep repairing units (and keep on the staff needed to make the repairs, write RMA's, handle shipping, etc) than it was to dump the bad cables in the dessert somewhere and buy up a new inventory of cables.
Despite the fact that thousands of loyal customers left the brand behind in favor of the competitors was not an issue because retailers were still buying the stock up based on it's popularity and low price point. It was cheaper to lose what, in the end, was a few customers, than stop selling crap to people.
Is Microsoft in the same boat? Yup. They invested millions and millions of dollars just in the physical inventory for the Xbox360. They aren't going to just toss all that and go back to the drawing board, even if it means that thousands of people get pissed at them. At the end of the day, 1000 people buy a brand new Xbox360 for every unit that gets sent back. Not that I agree with this, but the bottom line simply does not justify that they go out of their way to make people happy. They can swap your units all day, but in the end, you're still getting the same thing.
This is how it works in electronics and this is price you, as a consumer, pay for having high-performance gear available at low prices. My take on it is this: after the second replacement, it's time to move on. They don't care about you or your problems. They can't even give you your money back because they weren't the ones who took it to begin with. - Claude1971, on 01/23/2008, -6/+17not if they want to play the 360. I don't own a 360(i have a PS3), but I certainly do sympathize with them. I went through the same ***** with the Dreamcast years ago. Bet if our PS3's started blowing up, you'd be mad if someone constantly said owning a Wii would solve your problems. Grow up fanboy
- charlescheese, on 01/23/2008, -5/+16Actually, there are LOTS and LOTS of stories of this happening and refurbs showing up DOA. It's not like this is an isolated incident. It happens all the time. I honestly can't believe that after over 2 years of this crap they have not significantly redesigned the 360 and on top of that come up with a solution to fix the boxes that are coming back to them in a lasting way.
- AvidPreatorian, on 01/23/2008, -2/+12actually no, nintendo i cant talk about because i dont own a wii but Sony is great with their PS3 support. my buddies have sent theirs in jsut to receive brand new ones 1.5weeks later. 360 however takes longer and with the amount of them being return or exchanged, there's bound to be a bottleneck. i have to say, having both, that PS3 is a far better quality system. (even more and better games are coming so please don't use that silly counterargument).
- maley, on 01/23/2008, -2/+12It was unacceptable to begin with and pathetic that people even put up with it from the start.
- proliance, on 01/23/2008, -8/+18Take it to small claims court. Sue for the price of the X-box, games, and HD-DVD player. Bring your receipts, notes of phone calls, and everything else you have. Most likely Microsoft is not going to send one of their expensive lawyers to defend itself and you will win by default. But even if they do send their lawyer you have a really good chance of winning.
- RRunner316, on 01/23/2008, -15/+25Hopefully this will be the end all/be all ultimate STFU to all of those 360 fanboys that have nothing better to do than flame PS3 forums.
- AvidPreatorian, on 01/23/2008, -4/+13this isn't about fanboism, this is about which one is a more reliable/quality system. if you can't tell which that is then you deserve a 360 with all its shortcomings.
- h3lx, on 01/23/2008, -0/+8which is exactly why I refuse to do business with them. Some days you get the deal of the century, later, you just get bent over and dry ***** into submission.
- Uberpussy, on 01/23/2008, -3/+11Wait your saying you got lucky because yours didn't break for a year?
Since when did we start accepting that a console that explodes after a year is acceptable? It's no where near acceptable. M$ have screwed every xbox360 owner over and to make matters worse they are still doing it and people are still buying something that despite having revisions still has a 10% chance of dying on you in a fairly short period of time!
I have a wii & a PS3 and I would have a 360...but there is now way I'm forking out for something that likely won't last for long. - kingmanic, on 01/23/2008, -5/+13The PS3 is fine in a cabinet. I ran Folding@home for 2 days in a poorly ventilated glass and wood cabinet without any problems.
- turbojugend23, on 01/23/2008, -0/+8I'm on my 3rd Xbox. Every time I send one in, they send me a different refurb unit back.
- kingmanic, on 01/23/2008, -0/+8Best buy is a pretty inconsistent company. Depending on management, they may be good or bad for warranties. millage may vary.
- knailbomb420, on 01/23/2008, -0/+7Its not inaccurate, out of the 6 times I have went through this 3 times I received the same console back that I sent in. Also you don't send the HD in when it is being repaired, anyway why would you mark on it, when all you have to do is write down the serial number?
- turbojugend23, on 01/23/2008, -3/+10I'll second that. My replacement 360 is A LOT louder than my original one. Sounds like a damn jet taking off.
- mywhitenoise, on 01/23/2008, -0/+7That may be my problem. I added a 160GB internal WD drive.
- mywhitenoise, on 01/23/2008, -2/+9You sure know how to waste your money.
- blainer0121, on 01/23/2008, -1/+8I love my PS3, though I'm not going to jump on the wii sucks bandwagon, because I love my wii as well. Haven't played it much, but a few highly rated games have come out, although I'm the type to like endless ocean type games, so that may explain it. :|
Back to the PS3 though, I was sitting on the fence as well, all my friends have 360's, and I really thought that they had fixed the issues. Bought the ps3 though because of bluray, cheaper than the 360/hddvd combo, and I like the looks of it, plus I hadn't heard of many problems, though I may be wrong. To be honest though, games are a little short in supply, and the online system, well, I need more friends with PS3's, because I can't even try the online functionality.
Anyways, that's it. PS3, rocks, so does wii, so does XBOX360, but the issues have got to go.
Also, too much caffeine makes me ramble. - AntBing, on 01/23/2008, -1/+8You must not have an HDTV.
- doctechnical, on 01/23/2008, -3/+10I didn't realize that heat and quality went together. From now on I'll watch movies on my toaster oven.
- superkendall, on 01/23/2008, -1/+7That's the attempt to cure the problem, which is heat related... but a bigger louder fan can only do so much.
- mywhitenoise, on 01/23/2008, -5/+11You mean all those games that are also on/will be on PC?
Ratchet, Uncharted, Warhawk are all 'A' game material (what the ***** does that mean anyway?). 2008 looks excellent for PS3, pretty boring for 360 aside from Ninja Gaiden 2.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v653/mywhitenois ... - kingmanic, on 01/23/2008, -0/+6There there'd be just 3 games for it. They'd all be gems but only 3. And you'd have the option of 14 beautiful cases and the retail price would be $1000 for the cheapest model. That model would have a 10 gig HD, a airport wifi, be powered by a 1 generation old processor have a video card 1 generations back but will still boast about beating the performance of all machines that are 1/3 of it's price. Also the controller will only have 1 button. Stylistic choice.
- gothsquirrel, on 01/23/2008, -3/+9I have had a 360 for 8 months with no problems. Even with late night halo and oblivion sessions.
- walnutthewise, on 01/23/2008, -4/+10There is a certain point where one must say enough is enough. Luckily, I bought my 360 from Costco and was able to return it when it got the RROD. However, the new 360 started to scratch my dics. (yes it was horizontal and I did not move it with the disc in) Unfortunately, the games scratched were not microsoft published and they would not send replacement copies. I returned that 360 to costco and bought a PS3, and I am loving it.
- tonyscha, on 01/23/2008, -0/+6I was thinking more of the line as bad power in his house
- migitalwarfare, on 01/23/2008, -1/+7was yours before, or after they fixed the overheating issues?
- AARGH2K, on 01/23/2008, -7/+13This guy keeping it in a closed box with no ventilation or what? Also what's actually occuring when it "breaks"? 360 is nowhere near perfect, but there are alot of people out there that don't know how to take care of electronics either. Buried for inaccurate (its not the same console over and over) and for lacking in the verification/info department.
- betrayed, on 01/23/2008, -7/+13Oh, just go swallow a knife or something.
- yunus, on 01/23/2008, -2/+8The amount of computing the Xbox 360 does creates a lot of heat. If you want great graphics and speed thats going to be an issue no matter what system you buy or what computer you buy. If you want something that will never overheat the 16-bit SNES is available.
- tonyscha, on 01/23/2008, -0/+6How about the serial number?
- h3lx, on 01/23/2008, -3/+8I've repaired two and fully replaced one, my brother (got his at launch) has never had an issue, ever. Both of us are running pretty much the same set up, USB fans, well ventilated, we even play the same genre of games. I think it just means some of them are crap.
- Endar, on 01/23/2008, -3/+8This article is completely false. Microsoft is replacing defected 360's free of charge.
