I'm an avid halo fan but...
Sonic, Duke Nukem, Lara Croft, Pacman etc have already been established as greater video game characters and considered more significant than Master Cheif.

Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3 - chaosblade77, on 09/29/2008, -7/+31I respectfully disagree, and I realize that I'm practically begging to be buried by saying this.
While Halo is an above average series from what I've played (heck, Halo CE is one of the only FPS games I've brought myself to finish), that doesn't necessarily make the main character great. I think he's comparable to Mario in that respect. Both star in good games (excluding spin offs..) and both could be considered industry icons. Mario, as a character, isn't all that great though and I can't agree with any list that considers him one of the greatest game characters.
I tend to be one of the critics mentioned in the article. I believe that the Master Chief was an attempt at creating a character similar to classic/retro characters, where imagination was used leaving the player more attached to the character. The problem is where and how he was detailed and what is left to the imagination, causing him to come across as bland rather than mysterious or interesting. I realize some people might like how his character was detailed, but I can't say that I do. - Oxygen, on 09/30/2008, -0/+18If they're not all on 1 page I'm not reading it...

You totally contradict yourself by asking that last question, "Has the xbox even had 50 characters?". And the answer is probably "yes", but, 50 characters that shaped the platform? Hell no. I can only think of 2. Master Chief, and whoever is in Gears. This is mainly because we don't know that much about him. The more we know about that character, the more human and vulnerable they seem.

I assumed by the article's title that it would be Xbox exclusives (in which case, why would you need a top fifty list anyway), but when you're including games that were popularized first on the PC (Half-Life 2), the Playstation 2 (Katamari), or even non-exclusive titles (GTA IV), the title might as well read "Top Fifty Video Game Characters Of All Time, But Not From Those Other Two Companies."
