- mywhitenoise, on 03/19/2009, -27/+141It's funny that people are burying you. Ignorance is bliss.
The console is garbage, you may love the games and software it supports, but there's no denying that the hardware is a piece of *****. It overheats, it breaks, it has a huge brick, it literally sounds like jet taking off, it scratches discs, has hard drive failures...come on, that's "garbage". - WhereAmI, on 03/19/2009, -36/+119One dude in the comments there seemed to know what he's talking about.
DWells55:
"tl;dr - Microsoft has simply updated the system so what used to be reported as three red lights is now the E74, creating the illusion that the three red lights failure has been fixed and allowing them to save money from not having to do extended repairs."
Crafty Microsoft, crafty. - UNSCleric, on 03/19/2009, -37/+120Garbage.
- doshindude, on 03/20/2009, -24/+9315 emails =/= staggering amount on the rise.
buried. - WhereAmI, on 03/20/2009, -11/+72PS3 hardware problems are NOWHERE NEAR the 360 problems, stop trying to compare them.
3% is an acceptable failure rate, actually thats sorta high. So at least 3 in 100 PS3 users on the internet will have some kind of issue. Not hard to find. The 360 on the other hand had a billion dollars set aside to repair that piece of *****. You can find all sorts of people that had the RRoD.
I know no one with a "ylod" however did know someone who had one of the disc drive problems. 1 of alot of PS3 owners that I know.
I can't even count the 360 RRoD, I'll have to say 3 of my friends DIDN'T have a problem with their 360, 3 of alot of 360 owners.
I have had the RRoD by the way. - DeadPlasmaCell, on 03/19/2009, -9/+61Except that isn't the case.. If it really were there would be zero RROD reports from systems that have NXE installed and that's BS because there are still people getting the RROD with NXE, myself being one of them just a couple weeks ago.
- JackSchittt, on 03/20/2009, -11/+56I do have to say one thing about XBox fanboys -- they truly are dedicated.
I mean seriously........I'm reading about people having 2, 3, or even as many as SIX consoles fail on them. People in this thread have BACKUP X-box systems in case their main one fails! I can't imagine sticking with a console that fails MULTIPLE times, nor would I ever consider buying a console with a failure rate so high that people buy backup consoles to use during downtimes.
I've had a PS3 from day one. And I've still got the original 60 GB model. I've never had a single hardware issue with it. I would NEVER consider buying a "backup" console. I have no ventilation issues, and it doesn't make more noise than a washing machine when it's on. I like the ability to throw a 500 GB hard drive into there without having to buy overpriced proprietary parts from MS. And I use the thing about 5-6 hours a day. Sometimes significantly more.
How people can continue to defend a system that has such an enormous failure rate is beyond me. It just defies all logic. - specialK16, on 03/20/2009, -5/+42@fred: You are the fanboy in here, or the anti-Sony troll at least. Nowhere did Mywhitenoise said anything about the PS3, you are a complete ***** idiot.
Btw, the yellow light of death or whatever you wan't to call it is SO ***** RARE that you cannot even find enough info about it on the net.
Whether you like it or not, the hardware on the PS3 is way more reliable than the Xbox 360. - Ashkc88, on 03/20/2009, -10/+40I agree, the OS and software are amazing. The system itself is absolute garbage.
There honestly isn't any excuse for the system to be so faulty. I have never bought a system with so many problems. The Wii may be lacking in games, but at least it works when I ***** want it to.
The terrible 360 hardware is the reason why I buy multiplatform games for my PS3. - krammaii, on 03/20/2009, -7/+34As a analyst, this "study" make me wanna cry.
- lasko, on 03/20/2009, -4/+29i got the e74 error about a year ago. i told microsoft i got the rrod so i sent it out and they sent me a different one. i don't think they even bothered trying to turn it on to see if it really was a rrod. i would suggest trying that, it saved me $100
- briLo, on 03/20/2009, -7/+31It's funny watch grown adults say their system of choice is the superior system when in reality, nobody gives a *****.
- ghostlywind, on 03/20/2009, -10/+33Wow and my PS3 is still going strong after a year and half, and my friend who got a 360 at about the same time is already on his 3rd one.
- vondrak, on 03/20/2009, -1/+24I don't know why people are digging you down. From the looks of the graph they only got 57 responses. That is not enough to declare a trend when there have been millions of xboxs sold.
Putting a disclaimer that your "study" isn't perfect may make you more honest and transparent, but it doesn't mean your imperfect study is legitimate. - Willeth, on 03/20/2009, -9/+31Note that in their graph they aren't charting when the error happened, they're charting when the email got sent to them.
So Joystiq post asking anyone who has had the error to report it to them. And then they run a story saying that the number of reports they're getting about this issue is drastically on the rise?
Christ. - grantmoore3d, on 03/20/2009, -2/+23Microsoft, next time you release a console, please make sure it's going to work.
- Kenelm, on 03/19/2009, -31/+51This article is plainly retarded. I mean, they received 15 mails from people this month saying they have this problem, so it's meaningful?
I'm a moderator on Tom's Guide forums, and we have our own stats there: 79 people reported YLoD on their PS3 since the beginning of the month, that's twice more than last month. As for Error 74 on Xbox 360, only three since the beginning of the month.
Does it means that PS3 hardware failures > 360 hardware failures? No. That's absolutely not meaningful, it's just a bunch of people having problems with their console.
Also, I highly doubt that such a thing could be changed by a software update. RRoD is built-in the 360, it depends solely on the hardware, the software doesn't even have the time to boot before the red l are on. You can even artificially cause it by quickly shutting down power, causing the console to lock to avoid damage ; no software there either. - Kbriggs, on 03/20/2009, -4/+24They also said that the RROD error has been showing up since the NXE update so you may want to calm down on the conspiracy. I think it has more to do with ***** hardware.
- Thorpe, on 03/20/2009, -10/+29I reckon Joystiq are running out of ideas for blogs.
- wowsah156, on 03/20/2009, -0/+19to summarise: Xbox360 gamres are good, but the hardware sucks. Microsoft just isnt a games console manufacturer.
- UselessTrivia, on 03/20/2009, -1/+18RRODs spike every time a huge title comes out because more people are using the consoles. NXE added a whole bunch of new features that cause people to use their systems more: web-enabled downloads give people incentive to leave their systems on or in standby so that they can download stuff to their consoles during the day. Netflix integration has people watching a ton of extra movies and TV on their consoles.
More up-time means more load on the hardware. It isn't that surprising to me that errors are on the rise. It's not exactly NXE per se, because this is a hardware problem, but since NXE people are using their systems more. Also keep in mind that this might be something that would have happened regardless of NXE as consoles start reaching a certain age. Maybe E74 errors are more likely on a 3 year old box than a 1 year old box. - Ouze, on 03/20/2009, -1/+18While my (launch) 360 has never given me a problem, between the RROD and this ***** I sincerely doubt I'll buy whatever MS's next console is. Feels less like "buying a console" and more like "gambling away my money on whether or not it will fail".
- tidu, on 03/20/2009, -3/+19I'm an Xbox 360 user but would have to agree that the hardware is garbage. I spent a lot of time on the support forums during the 2 1/2 months my Xbox didn't have sound (thanks for the speedy patch, MS) And there are a TON of people who have had their video cards fry. Microsoft won't acknowledge that it's their fault and they charge $100 to get it fixed. And talk about fanboyism: the question on those forums isn't "Where should I stuff the dynamite in my Xbox" It's "Hmm, should I spend $100 on repairs or $200 on a new system?"
They rushed this system and they're paying for it big time now, and tarnishing their name in the process. - V3n0M, on 03/20/2009, -2/+17Update: Logins to xbox.com are working again.
- rusty123jimi, on 03/20/2009, -1/+15Buy a PS3...has many of the same games and it's own good set of exclusives.
- wild, on 03/20/2009, -7/+21They all have problems. None are safe.
- inactive, on 03/20/2009, -1/+15I think they don't even know why it's so bad. Revision after revision and the quality only improves slightly. This thing has been around for 3 years and has gone through about 5 revisions and it's still crap.
Note to self: never buy hardware from a software company. - Licurgo, on 03/20/2009, -7/+20i think they made the xbox as a recruitment tool by the army, you have to deal with faulty equipment made by the lowest bidder,
- V3n0M, on 03/19/2009, -6/+18I just got an RROD on my 2nd Xbox, now the site is down so I can't even login to send it back. Came here to see if anyone else was having the same problem..
- Wrangler76, on 03/20/2009, -3/+15Uh really. I also take into account reliability when choosing a product. Maybe that's just me.
- lynx44, on 03/20/2009, -1/+13Kind of sucks how it's the norm for companies to not take responsibility for their products. If the problem is clearly not from a user error, why should they take on the cost of having to pay for its repair? They're making the act of buying a console like gambling. Games are where they make their money, so they should do what they can to make sure that they don't discourage users from buying the console. I would have bought a 360 a long time ago, but I'm too afraid that I'm going to end up with a brick, then have to shell out a substantial amount of money to continue playing it.
- nerdherder, on 03/20/2009, -7/+18The arcade version is not a real 360.
- WhereAmI, on 03/20/2009, -2/+13Yeah thats a good point DeadPlasmaCell.
- farhanfarn, on 03/20/2009, -1/+12Protip: Just send the console in saying the problem is three red lights they will usualy fix it under the same warranty and you wont pay a dime
done it multiple times - kylev, on 03/20/2009, -2/+13The Joystiq guys really have proven that they don't understand statistics. A simple count of errors is nearly useless; you'd have to consider MTBF (mean time between failure). Personally, my Xbox has gotten a lot more use out of it since NXE because (1) I watch a bunch of NetFlix on it, (2) Left 4 Dead came out, (3) I picked up LEGO Indiana Jones used and developed an unnatural obsession with finding all the treasures. To decide that increased failure is *caused* by the NXE is absurd. It is just as likely that NXE or other factors have caused increased usage of Xboxes and made the pre-existing flaws reveal themselves.
- filovirus, on 03/20/2009, -5/+15I wish Microsoft would just level with us and tell us the truth about why their hardware is so flaky?
- WhereAmI, on 03/20/2009, -5/+15Except the drives do last long. You also have no evidence of your comment.
I can say that I know someone that had a disc problem, and it was a 40GB model from 2007. Sent it in, Sony fixed it, end of the story. He continues to play his PS3 to this day and now his parents may get one to fit with their media center (I told them the price may drop soon). - supersickie, on 03/20/2009, -3/+13The 360 has been out since 2006 and you don't think the general public has been made aware of it's shortcomings until now?
- LogicBomB, on 03/20/2009, -3/+12I've had a 360 since day 1 and I've gone through 5 of them so far (on my 6th now). I take care of my electronics too. The new ones aren't fixed or less problems, they all break down about the same.
- hammburglar, on 03/20/2009, -4/+13oh only one time! how reliable!
- p13t3rm, on 03/20/2009, -5/+14It started happening to me two days ago while I was playing Braid.
I believe this is legitimate.
I have already sent my ***** 360 twice!!! - LogicBomB, on 03/20/2009, -3/+12If you are afraid of problems, don't buy any 360's. Problems come with the system, period.
For example: I'm on my 6th I treat the system more delicately than my cat. - Androly, on 03/20/2009, -14/+23***** morons will keep giving Microsh1t their money, it's unbelievable.
- staticneuron, on 03/20/2009, -4/+13He didn't say that at all. Let us say that there are 3 things that can cause the RROD issue. Chances are one of them has been relabled.
- dirtyhipster, on 03/20/2009, -1/+10As "an" analyst
- specialK16, on 03/20/2009, -6/+15Actually, you retard, I never said YOU SAID the hardware in the 360 was more reliable. So YOU are putting words into my mouth instead. Your comment is so ***** ironic it is actually quite hilarious.
It's not a short circuit of logic. You are some-*****-how assuming that Mywhitenoise is a Sony troll, when in fact he never ever said anything about Sony at all.
It's impossible discussing with people like you, so good day to you sir. - JigoroKano, on 03/20/2009, -0/+8Hey, Microsoft makes excellent mice.
- SpitRage, on 03/20/2009, -3/+11Error...(=/=) != (≠)
- Coffeedemon, on 03/20/2009, -0/+8Exactly. Just like letters to the editor. No one writes to say everything is fine.
- Gnar04, on 03/20/2009, -3/+11i got the e74 error on my elite a few months ago, i was freaking out and after turning it on and off for a few minutes, it turned to a RROD, after a few minutes of rroding, it went back to the e74 error, then after a few minutes back to a rrod. this was a week prior to the NXE update
