Portal Still Alive Will Include New Puzzles, But No New Plot
kotaku.com — Speaking with Valve's Doug Lombardi earlier this week at E3, we got onto the topic of the upcoming Xbox Live Arcade version of Portal. I wanted to know what gamers could expect from the game and why Valve decided to tweak it for the XBLA release.

- daebat, on 07/18/2008, -2/+19at least there is promise of more sequels or even a rendition of the original. i'd rather them stick with something that works than murder the original by completely changing everything around.
- JettaMan, on 07/19/2008, -1/+7If you have the Orange Box, what would be the point of getting this game? Sounds like there won't be any real difference.
- fokov, on 07/19/2008, -1/+4Just download the free custom maps already provided by the community.
- Connerd117, on 07/19/2008, -0/+6Unless you have it on the 360 or PS3. I know, "PC gaming is better than console gaming because of mods" but tell that to my 300$ crappy computer.
- EvilFerret, on 07/19/2008, -2/+1A $300 computer should be able to run any game on the source engine on high settings with ease. Perhaps you should have said "Tell that to my crappy computer I bought 5yrs ago and only paid 300$ for".
- gadgetlust, on 07/19/2008, -2/+4If you're looking for a portal fix and have a DS and linker, check out the homebrew "Still Alive DS" -- it's 2D but it's quite good! http://stillaliveds.free.fr/index.php
- daebat, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1well I think what made portal is the storyline. nobody told me what portal was or how it worked before I bought the game and I just thought for a long time that the story was training for the real game. If they could somehow cross half-life functionality with the amazing concept of the portal gun we'd have a great game.
- uberduger, on 07/19/2008, -0/+0Please please please please, Valve, make us bigger and more varied game using the Portal gun. I'd be the happiest boy in all Toytown.
- JettaMan, on 07/19/2008, -1/+7If you have the Orange Box, what would be the point of getting this game? Sounds like there won't be any real difference.
- l800LEMMINGS, on 07/18/2008, -9/+4cmon you have to change it up a little bit i'm not going to buy the same game again just because it has different levels
- scooterbaga, on 07/18/2008, -2/+21Sounds like a vehicle for the DLC we should've gotten with Orange Box.
...Don't care. Must have.
Here's hoping there's a level editor, and user trading of custom maps... and cheap/free DLC.- rjc5056, on 07/19/2008, -13/+2Honestly, I'd rather have the new TF2 class upgrades and achievements. Since when do the PC players get preferential treatment? Like they're the larger consumer base or something.
- aatreides, on 07/19/2008, -0/+17They are a larger consumer base, and Valve has been a PC developer since 1998.
- Solusar, on 07/19/2008, -2/+2We are buddy. G1.
- Katana314, on 07/19/2008, -5/+5Since Microsoft disallows such frequent or over 50 MB updates. Any complaints about Valve's lack of class updates should be directed towards XBOX.COM.
- positron, on 07/19/2008, -0/+9But if they add a level editor how are they going to sell you the same game with different levels again?
- xxbrighteyed, on 07/19/2008, -0/+2@ scooterbaga
By making it a standalone, they're allowing for people who don't have Orange Box to purchase it, as well as those that do - chillypacman, on 07/19/2008, -0/+4"Here's hoping there's a level editor, and user trading of custom maps... and cheap/free DLC."
There's a level editor with the PC version, as well as user trading of custom maps.. and cheap/free DLC for PC users too.
However if they added an easy to use level editor there's no way it owuld be xbox exclusive.- Darkangel754, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1I'm pretty sure all of Valves DLC is free on the PC
- rjc5056, on 07/19/2008, -13/+2Honestly, I'd rather have the new TF2 class upgrades and achievements. Since when do the PC players get preferential treatment? Like they're the larger consumer base or something.
- iamsmooth, on 07/18/2008, -10/+5This broke my heart. Since it's a full game, they're probably gonna charge something like 20 bucks for it. I won't be getting it anymore :(
- TheBadWolf, on 07/19/2008, -2/+1The standard version of Portal is $20.
- Katana314, on 07/19/2008, -1/+20"This broke my heart"
...and killed me.
And tore me to pieces.
And threw every piece into a fire.
- rjc5056, on 07/19/2008, -3/+26What's all this I'm hearing about deceptive baked goods? It could certainly bear repeating in the DLC so I get another 4 months of wit from around the internets.
- LucasVB, on 07/19/2008, -1/+8Lies.
- styromaniac, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1The cake is a lie!!!
The cake is a lie!!!
The cake is a lie!!!
- grifta67, on 07/19/2008, -2/+92the sequel is a lie.
- NoDisk, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1"At today's E3 press conference, the company teased a new installment called Portal: Still Alive. Essentially an expansion for the original game, Still Alive will feature new stages and Achievements, and be available exclusively on Xbox Live Arcade this fall. GLaDOS tells us the Enrichment Center has been hard at work, which should at least keep us satisfied until Portal 2 comes next year." - 1up
Portal 2 is coming.
Not that I want to interfere with an obligatory regurgitation of a calcified joke that's almost reached that ripe state of eye-rolling familiarity necessary for its eventual incarnation as Xplay promo-text... I just don't want people to be mislead into thinking there isn't a sequel.
Portal 2 is currently slated to drop 12/15/08, a couple months after Still Alive. Worry not, I'm sure it will offer new sustenance for meme-seeking automatic typers.

- AEdgett77, on 07/19/2008, -3/+27I can live with the same plot.
- counterplex, on 07/19/2008, -3/+2While you are dying I will be still alive!
- deltron, on 07/19/2008, -0/+38I was hoping we'd be outside of the test facility this time.
- Katana314, on 07/19/2008, -0/+7"You don't want to know what it's like out there..."
Personally, I like the test facility. Certainly easy to map for as well.- jimmick, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1Half life and portal are going to merge games, I predict.
So it won't be Chell outside, it'll be gordon with a portal gun - Darkangel754, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1@ Jimmick
Gordon will NOT be using the portal gun in any upcoming games. Have you every noticed that there are no mirrors in any Half-life games? or that you can't see gordon's feet? it's because Valve wants you to feel as if you are gordon and giving him the portal gun would have you be able to see him. That and I don't think Valve would do something as expected as that.
- jimmick, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1Half life and portal are going to merge games, I predict.
- tehmacuser, on 07/19/2008, -7/+0I for one welcome our test facility overlords.
- Acglaphotis, on 07/19/2008, -1/+10That has to be the worst use of that meme I've ever seen.
- eyefork2, on 07/19/2008, -0/+6I don't think Portal: Still Alive and Portal 2 are to be considered the same. Portal: Still Alive is more of an extended version of Portal, and Portal 2 will be released later as a true sequel.
- Ribbott, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1I was thinking about that (okay, thinking about how cool that gun would be IRL), but I realized it only works that well because the test facility has all flat walls, perfect for portals. Taking it out into the rest of the world, it would be hard to work with stuff like hitting a tree with the gun because there isn't enough space for a full portal, and if they did put flat panels in some places just for the gun it would make puzzles too obvious.
Just my two cents.
- Katana314, on 07/19/2008, -0/+7"You don't want to know what it's like out there..."
- Tophillious, on 07/19/2008, -10/+6I know a guy whose maps are gonna be in Still Alive. I know it's hard to believe, but trust me. The maps he had were amazing, and it's definitely worth the money.
- iammzac, on 07/19/2008, -1/+15Pics or GTFO!
- pharekyz, on 07/19/2008, -0/+10I trust you completely. You ARE from the internet after all!
- Tophillious, on 07/19/2008, -1/+2I didn't really expect anyone to believe me. His maps are free to download from the interwebz though.
- fishpen0, on 07/19/2008, -0/+3Link?
- purplesawdust, on 07/19/2008, -1/+7I don't mind some Portal filler to play while i am waiting for Portal 2.
- alexray0, on 07/19/2008, -5/+2Triumph? ...not so much.
- alihaq717, on 07/19/2008, -3/+4please dont digg me down, but i really dont understand why they are releasing this. i own a xbox 360 and the orange box and have played portal all the way through three times, but whats the point of releasing it as a XBLA game rather than just downloadable content for the orange box? Im almost 100 percent sure theres a good reason that i dont know of yet, so sorry
- Katana314, on 07/19/2008, -2/+2I'm not 100 percent sure cause I don't even own an Xbox, but maybe this way even people who didn't opt for the full OB can get the game. Also Valve doesn't quite like the concept of "paid downloadable content". That's what mods are for, and they don't make anyone pay for mods. (Obviously, only people like Microsoft are allowed to do that)
- Darkangel754, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1100% correct, who the hell dugg you down?
- sweatyyeti, on 07/19/2008, -1/+6Because not everyone owns the Orange Box? Portal was released as a stand-along game on PC so why not on xbox.
- xxbrighteyed, on 07/19/2008, -0/+4I did say this in a reply above, and sweatyeti did touch on it here, but by making it a standalone, they're allowing for people who don't have Orange Box to purchase it, as well as those that do - I imagine that Portal is a game that appeals to a much wider audience than Half Life 2 and Team Fortress
- Katana314, on 07/19/2008, -2/+2I'm not 100 percent sure cause I don't even own an Xbox, but maybe this way even people who didn't opt for the full OB can get the game. - rjc5056, on 07/19/2008, -3/+1guess I should have added the /sarcasm part so people like aatreides can understand...
- Borgcube636, on 07/19/2008, -12/+7Ha ha ha!! Sucks to be an Xbox/console gamer! PC FTW!
- Acglaphotis, on 07/19/2008, -1/+11You know you can have both, right?
- mt3ch, on 07/19/2008, -1/+0Sucks to be xbox/console gamer? I consider myself a pretty big nerd, however I couldn't bother/care about bashing an inanimate object such as an Xbox. It's simply mind boggling to me. It goes beyond being passionate about something or being super nerdy, and delves into the stupidity realm. Maybe it's just human nature to do that, and I'm simply repressing it. Either way it goes way over my head. Maybe I'm too high.
- iammzac, on 07/19/2008, -1/+3I wish there was a course creator so you could make your own portal room.
- tedrock, on 07/19/2008, -0/+9you can... for the PC :D
- lordtyros, on 07/19/2008, -0/+4Really? But I thought the PC can only be used for games and you have to spend $2000 a month to upgrade it!
Console fanboys, you lied to me!
- lordtyros, on 07/19/2008, -0/+4Really? But I thought the PC can only be used for games and you have to spend $2000 a month to upgrade it!

Does the portal version on the XBOX 360 come with any challenges or advanced levels? The PC version has a number of challenges (You repeat the same maps, but you have to complete them in a certain number of steps, amount of time, or number of portals used. Complete the map in 5 portals or less, etc.).
There are also advanced levels which are the same levels, but with acid in certain places that there weren't before, metal walls in certain places so you can't make portals, and other extra hazards to make the map harder.
Does the XBOX 360 get these? If not, this may be what they are adding.- rivs, on 07/19/2008, -0/+8Yeah, it has them.
- palehorse864, on 07/19/2008, -0/+5Thanks.
- rivs, on 07/19/2008, -0/+8Yeah, it has them.
- MasterGrief, on 07/19/2008, -4/+36This is a semi-triumph.
- VgRasta, on 07/19/2008, -2/+23I'm making a note here: some success
- Seantacular, on 07/19/2008, -2/+18It's not too hard to overstate my satisfaction.
- gnarnia, on 07/19/2008, -3/+11Aperture Science?
- Tigergrape, on 07/19/2008, -2/+12We do a little, because we can
- Frogee, on 07/19/2008, -2/+11for the good of some of us
- Black6x, on 07/19/2008, -2/+10Except the ones on life support.
- nothing4me, on 07/19/2008, -0/+4But there's some sense crying over every mistake.
- djruden, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4I may start trying if I run out of cake.
- lilcvbballfreak, on 07/19/2008, -7/+2NEW PUZZLES!?!? I thought they would make a sequel with the same levels...dumbass...
- shiftless, on 07/19/2008, -0/+2You missed something there...
- soot, on 07/19/2008, -1/+9Five bucks somebody will make these "exclusive" maps for free on the PC within a week.
- Remmiz, on 07/19/2008, -0/+3If they aren't released simultaneously by Valve, I know I will be jumping on this.
- bjs3171, on 07/19/2008, -1/+1haven't played the game yet, and i have an xbox, so i might as well get this.
- vault, on 07/19/2008, -0/+3one of the most fun games I've ever played- portal is in a class of its own. if you like puzzle/problem-solving games, that is.
- Tigergrape, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1Xbox 360, yes?
Get the Orange Box -
BEFORE you get the game advertised in *this* post. Portal is included in the ORANGE BOX.
- florin, on 07/19/2008, -1/+1All I want to know is - will there be a standalone version for PS3?
The Orange Box is a rip-off if you don't care for the other games. - eyefork2, on 07/19/2008, -1/+2Portal: Still Alive and Portal 2 are completely different games. Still Alive is not a sequel to the original Portal, it is more of an "extended" version, hence the XBLA release and lack of a new plot.
Portal 2 is coming: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal_(video_game)#D ...
Supposedly the CEO of EA has already played Portal 2 (not Still Alive) and said it was awesome: http://kotaku.com/5025889/john-riccitiello-little- ...
In other words, we will get Portal 2 with a completely new plot, so yay - Tigergrape, on 07/19/2008, -3/+1I can live without a new plot! i have OB on the 360, so its good for me. but the PC people must be scratching their teeth with anger!
- Ziziros, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1the story was a major part of what made portal fun.
of course the puzzles were entertaining, but I don't wanna pay just to continue playing puzzles to no point.
i am glad that there's mention of a sequel tho. - stevenk87, on 07/19/2008, -0/+2This was completely expected, but still disappointing. Oh well, at least we know that development on Portal 2 is up and running.
- sjmulder, on 07/19/2008, -1/+1I'm actually kind of glad now that, lacking an Xbox, I won't be missing out on anything in the story. A few maps I can live without.
- Shakermaker, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1I'm sure there will be a full Portal sequel with the new Half-Life, so having the whet my whistle is going to be awesome!!
- zezerik, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1Meh'... More levels and puzzles are all I ever wanted in the first Portal.
- 33PercentGod, on 07/19/2008, -3/+1Portal has a plot?
It's a puzzle game. I played it on mute.- Katana314, on 07/19/2008, -0/+4You SKIPPED on GLADOS?
MURDERER!
- Katana314, on 07/19/2008, -0/+4You SKIPPED on GLADOS?
- kidwithsword, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1Why would they change the plot? It's fine as it is... You're an idiot if you are disappointed by this.
- fever84, on 07/21/2008, -0/+0This is valve we are talking about. I have no dough that this game will have new content and it will be great fun
- truncheon, on 08/18/2008, -0/+1Old news - buried.
