- peterjmag, on 04/09/2008, -4/+89But can it run Crysis?
- lacronicus, on 04/09/2008, -11/+82Being someone who has mucked around a bit in the Crysis cfg, saying that it will look like "high" doesn't really mean much. A lot of the really neat stuff (transparent trees, parallax occlusion, sunrays, etc.) I'm fairly sure isn't enabled by simply setting things to "high." They also neglected to say under what circumstances those settings can be achieved. Sure, for small levels consoles are more than capable of handling graphics on the level of crysis, but how do they fare given comparable level sizes, with a comparable level of AI and physics?
Take the video on IGN, for example. While it does look extremely nice, it uses absolutely no AI, and the environment is likely tailored specifically for that scene. As such, that demo on "high" might be a great deal less demanding than a similar render of a Crysis demo on the same setting. This interview gives no indication of which "high" either console is able to achieve, leaving the performance question ultimately unanswered. - exp3000, on 04/09/2008, -9/+43well, if you run Crysis at 1280X720, turn down view distance and suck, it doesn't take much power. So im not surprised the consoles can run it when cut down. But it will never ever match the PC.
- lacronicus, on 04/09/2008, -4/+35Wait, so the best reply you could come up with is "you're a hater"? No comment on how I might be wrong, nothing about how developers will simply fit their games to the consoles' strong points? Sometimes I wonder why I even bother...
- BrandonMills, on 04/09/2008, -9/+40What the hell are you smoking? Your 360 does nothing but upscale at this point my friend. You won't see true 1080p until your next Xbox. PC video cards currently massively beat down console video cards, end of story. If you read the article, even the developer admits there will be sacrifices. They have no screenshots, and no footage yet. I wouldn't hold my breath, buddy.
- Tyrghast, on 04/09/2008, -2/+32You have yet to see a mac fanboy, have you?
- inactive, on 04/09/2008, -0/+28They are talking about the ENGINE. You could make a game of pong with cryengine 2, and have it run on 'high'. You could do a remake of pacman with cryengine 2 and run it on high.
BUT, Devs have already clarified that CRYSIS CANNOT RUN ON CONSOLES IN IT'S PRESENT FORM.
Crytek: Next Gen Consoles Are Too Weak for Crysis
"Speaking at the Games Convention in Leipzig, Bernd Diemer, senior game designer of Crytek, explained that next-generation consoles don’t offer enough computational power to run Crysis, German publication Heise reported."

- lacronicus, on 04/09/2008, -1/+15You do realize that an 8800gt is more than capable of running Crysis, right?

8800gt 512 for only 170 bucks. - BugMeNot2, on 04/09/2008, -0/+13All right.

Not bad, eh? - bigbadgoat, on 04/09/2008, -1/+13funny... my PS3 does 1080p natively for some games.
- Abno, on 04/09/2008, -1/+12It was nice of them to include the option to turn down the suck. I get headaches when I play games with the suck on high settings.
- ehal256, on 04/09/2008, -1/+11You mean like CoD 4 (600p) and Halo 3 (640p)? :P
- bluemist, on 04/09/2008, -0/+10It would be unfair for PC gamers if they could not tweak the game to look good "and" have decent frame rate comparable to the PS3/X360 versions. I play Crysis on a Core 2 Duo and an 8800GT, and the game still dips below 30fps on High. If Crytek can modify the engine to run that well on console, I hope they release some kind of performance improvement patch for the PC as well.
- BrandonMills, on 04/09/2008, -1/+11A 9600 GT goes for close to $110 after rebate. I can't help it that some people like getting scammed at Bestbuy for video cards.
- blurrie, on 04/09/2008, -7/+17does call of duty on 360 suck compared to call of duty on two 8800gts? b/c to me call of duty on a nice 1080i/p hdtv is sex. i know the purists will have their word in hedge wise on how it's a travisty that crysis will be given to ye of lil consoles... but us regular people who love to game.. and would rather game on a nice tv and console... not on a nice pc and monitor.. should be happy. i've been impressed by the 360's graphics prowess.. i haven't seen what a ps3 can do yet..
but how does a game like cod4 compare? - bratterscain, on 04/09/2008, -2/+12Yeah, but can your Xbox or PS3 come with an OS to let you pretty much do anything you like digitally as well as play the latest games? Nothing beats the power and flexibility of a PC. Games are just one of the perks. PC can be your gamestation, stereo system, TV, phone, development center, etc. which is usually all a big pain to setup on a console if at all possible.
- bejayel, on 04/09/2008, -1/+111080p support was not added in till later, and most games cant render so high because of the 360's lack of power.
- xMotu, on 04/09/2008, -1/+10Maybe once in a while purchase the game so they actually get money for their work.
- lacronicus, on 04/09/2008, -3/+12Problem with that is, I didn't actually try to prove anything. My post is practically pure skepticism; if anything, I'm trying to keep *other* people from making baseless assumptions from this article.
- asdfrewq, on 04/09/2008, -2/+10I'll see your Mac fanboy and raise you one Linux fanboy.
- ZaZ2137, on 04/09/2008, -0/+8That's not lemon juice....
- Dricon, on 04/09/2008, -0/+8Yeah the question will be the framerate.
- graemee, on 04/09/2008, -3/+10Congratulations, You spent how much to play a short $50 game?
- goffy59, on 04/09/2008, -5/+12Its unfortunate when PC games get ported to console. A step closer to destroying the dying PC market. And when that happens, I won't being playing games anymore. I ***** can't stand console controllers or consoles. PC have better controls and flexibility. I don't want to be forced to use software one way, and one way only. Damn game consoles in general.
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 04/09/2008, -1/+8Yeah, except it says "PC demo".
And you can see this type of stuff in Crysis, like this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YG5qDeWHNmk - Koush, on 04/09/2008, -1/+8Does this mean high as in high or highest, because high setting crysis doesnt look anywhere as near as good as highest settings.
- TheWorm, on 04/09/2008, -1/+8I use a 1080p monitor with my Xbox 360. Cheaper than an HDTV.
- baylat, on 04/09/2008, -6/+13$1000 is an overprice. you can run crysis with over $600 budget. You just have to know where to buy the parts.
- latova, on 04/09/2008, -1/+8Then don't blow your money on a new PC every year. Just get one solid midrange gaming machine and it'll last you longer than you think.
- Burner, on 04/09/2008, -0/+7Wut.
- Stevethegreat, on 04/09/2008, -2/+9Have you seen it on 2560x1600? I mean you ever seen any game on 2560x1600 for that matter?
COD4 on X360 is 600p, though, I think had to inform you on this.... - Stevethegreat, on 04/09/2008, -2/+9You can already do this by buying an $125 (after rebate) 9600 GT, CPUs are irrelevant anyway in this day and age regarding gaming, while RAM is dirt cheap (like $10 cheap). It can certainly handle the game on high on comparable to consoles resolution, but *nooo* computers are expensive that's why I have to buy two consoles of about $350 every 5 years and pay $20 premium on each and every game.
Also PCs are difficult to game on as to download and install the last graphics drivers every 6 months is a pain in the ass, while an HTPC case -which would enable me to game on my TV screen w/t the obtrusive huge ass tower in the middle of the room- is expensive (like $70). Not to talk about my inability to plug my X360 controller ..... those pesky usb ports *mumbles*.
So yeah, what a treat we would get now that we'll get a 2006 technology on 2009 whilst paying it $20 more, we -console gamers- must be very lucky. - BrandonMills, on 04/09/2008, -7/+13They said the same BS about Halflife 2 for Xbox 1. Show it running first.
- bobartig, on 04/09/2008, -3/+9... except for the graphics hardware not being as good, which tends to be important for, you know, graphics.
- colincornaby, on 04/09/2008, -4/+9Far Cry 2 runs at 1080p. 1080p = 1920 x 1080. Most PC's don't have displays at that resolution. (I just bought my first 1080p monitor actually, and it wasn't cheap...)
- TheGreatBelow, on 04/09/2008, -1/+6Not at all surprising. Don't forget what resolution the consoles will be running at.
- inactive, on 04/09/2008, -0/+5You may see crysis: instincts. A crappy watered down port, like farcry: instincts was. You get what you pay for.
- prleet, on 04/09/2008, -2/+7I spent 1600 on a new PC about 4+ Years ago and I think it was worth it. I have played countless number of games, and I don't regret for a moment that I spent that much for gaming/school/work. On the other hand, I also have consoles and I get bored of them, no matter how exclusive games they have, consoles are not in the same area of gaming as pc is, and it will never be. I ran COD4 on pc, its better than what I see on my PS3. I also think the PS3 version is better than the Xbox360 version. However, when it comes to gaming hardcore gaming, nothing beats pc....I thought I will start playing consoles so I got UT3 for PS3 and got bored quick, then bought it the same day for PC and only play it for pc..there is a difference..and pc gamers know!
- bejayel, on 04/09/2008, -0/+5rolf @ having to upscale TWICE!
- MaXiMuM32, on 04/09/2008, -4/+9I dont think the consoles will have a problem running with comparable AI and physics. The AI in Crysis was pretty ***** anyway.
- Abomonog, on 04/09/2008, -0/+4That year passed in 1996. What he was saying is that he doubts a console will come close to the PC in graphic setting quality. I'm inclined to agree with him.
- CedanticPunt, on 04/09/2008, -0/+4"If I buy a console game, it will work with no patches or the latest drivers etc having to be downloaded"
If only that was still the case. I bought Gran Turismo recently (on the day it was released in the UK). It insisted on doing a system update first, which took forever as the servers were probably being hammered by thousands of people doing the same thing. I didn't time it, but it was around 30 mins to do that. Then I had to install on to the hard drive. Which probably took another 30 minutes (I got bored and went off to do other stuff and it was still going when I got back). Then when I finally started the game it gave me the option of updating the game. Fortunalely that was optional as it kept failing after about 10 mins progress. So I left that to another day or I never would have got to try it out that night...
Not as pick up and go as I would have liked... - CrankyHippo, on 04/09/2008, -3/+7Not this generation at least. Although does anyone think the PS3 be able to handle it at near high-end PC levels?
- latova, on 04/09/2008, -1/+5What they seem to be doing for console gaming anyway is lowering the resolution in favor of higher graphic settings. While it may be "close to high" on the console it'll probably run at like 640x480 and stretched.
- TobiasParker, on 04/09/2008, -0/+4I'm not your buddy, Guy.
- GliTCH82, on 04/09/2008, -0/+4I agree with this, but I feel that PC users such as myself have been getting shafted by developers lately. Infinity Ward hasn't even decided if they plan to release for PC the new map pack that was just released on Xbox Live for 360 users. This is a slap on the face to the COD PC community that made the game as popular as it is today.
- BugMeNot2, on 04/09/2008, -0/+4The 9600GT is only slightly slower than the 8800GT.
The CPU can be overclocked.
The motherboard is a great overclocker.
And the power supply is more than enough. It's an extremely well made mid-range PSU for the price.
