- estvir, on 01/09/2008, -7/+249From the beginning this is the stance Microsoft has openly had.
- Uncle_Joe, on 01/09/2008, -14/+189I really could care less for either side but for god sakes the industry as a whole needs to make a decision.
- jtbndy, on 01/09/2008, -8/+153"Until Toshiba goes out of business, this war is not over."
God I hope not. Wish one of the formats would just die already. Having 2 formats producing different movies, is stupid.
Regardless, I'm not buying a single HD/BR movie until the price goes down to roughly 20 bucks. Paying 30-40 dollars for a movie is ridiculous. - JayD16, on 01/09/2008, -10/+116Then the 360 would be close to PS3 price at launch (more being a year earlier?) and there wouldn't be 17.7 million.
- briguymaine, on 01/09/2008, -4/+81Correct me if I'm wrong but of course a Blu Ray add on is POSSIBLE... Because of little things called USB ports many many things are POSSIBLE. External hard drive, possible. USB powered little missle thingy, possible. Humping dog, possible.
- cbrunet, on 01/09/2008, -36/+104Does this mean I might not have to buy a PS3 after all?
- Sk8SkaNJ, on 01/09/2008, -5/+67Not to mention it never would have launched as earlier as it did.
- darkNiGHTS, on 01/09/2008, -4/+62COULDN'T care less, otherwise it doesn't make sense.
- silverspyder, on 01/09/2008, -3/+61Microsoft: LISTEN UP! I WILL BUY A BLU-RAY player for my 360 if it's the same price as the HD-DVD player I've already bought!!! My offer stands.
- shockeriv, on 01/09/2008, -1/+37And for those of us who can't hop in our Enzo Ferrari at the Nurburing any time of day we would like, driving simulators are a great backup plan.
- charlescheese, on 01/09/2008, -4/+38Oh Microsoft did see this coming, which is exactly why they supported HD DVD. They wanted to delay BluRay long enough to take away the PS3's advantage as an HD movie player. I don't think they delayed it long enough though, and I'm pretty sure they thought their support of HD DVD would muddle the waters for a lot longer than it did.
- selfdisplaced, on 01/09/2008, -17/+51BluRay is not "Sony's Format"
- logicalnoise, on 01/09/2008, -8/+42the HD-DVD drive has never been required for any game and BR drive would be identical in execution. and based on the price structure of BR I won't be buying a BR drive/player for another year or two. Plus MS has stated several times that a BR drive would be possible if the market demanded it.
- betterth, on 01/09/2008, -15/+47Cute. He assumes we want to play Gran Turismo.
- charlescheese, on 01/09/2008, -5/+34With a PC you can install a ton of compressed data and the game ends up being much larger than the 7.2 gigs or whatever it is that Softy lets developers use on a DVD (I say that because they lock out a gig and half or 2 gigs on the DVD for every game for DRM and other things). Look at WoW, it's massive now.
- inactive, on 01/09/2008, -7/+35then i must be a fool.......
- morgrar, on 01/09/2008, -1/+28I bought the HD-DVD drive. I think it's a waste to buy a stand-alone player. If they come out with this, I'll have to think twice about what purchase I'm going to make. 'Cause right now, the PS3 looks very nice - just wish it had more games that I couldn't already play on the 360.
- Solkre, on 01/09/2008, -3/+28It would have cost more too.
- BinaryDelt, on 01/09/2008, -2/+26I don't know where you're buying your movies. All of the Blu-rays I've bought have been $15-$25.
- morphie, on 01/09/2008, -6/+29"Consumers are choosing HD DVD, but Hollywood isn't listening. While HD DVD has been trying to sell the format to consumers, Sony has focused on selling the Blu-ray brand and company."
Que? Am I missing something. I thought there were more blu-ray players + disks sold in the past 12 months... - xdeliriumx, on 01/09/2008, -1/+23Better than a sad tighter?
- DarKnight90, on 01/09/2008, -4/+25and the cost would be higher
- ducksta, on 01/09/2008, -17/+38They should worry bout bigger things like getting XBOX live to work
- inactive, on 01/09/2008, -5/+26Saying you can do more on the PSN than XBL is the biggest lie I've read on Digg today. Please tell me what these imagined features are, specifically? Anyone, and I mean ANYONE who says PSN is better than XBL has clearly not used both. Period.
- oldhick, on 01/09/2008, -9/+29Dandonia is a little fan boy with no real knowledge of whats going on. Sure, it looks like BR won, but the HD-DVD players aren't bricks all of the sudden. Mine still plays my movies at 1080p and looks amazing. Sure, the PS3 uses the BR drive for games, but what you miss is that this isn't necessarily better than DVD from a performance stand point.
The BR drive in the PS3 is a 2x that is capable of pushing about 7 MB/sec. The DVD drive in the 360 can push about 18 MB/sec. Capacity isn't everything. Will future BR drives that run faster be better than DVD, most likely.
But for now, calm down. You can get your PS3 and others can get their 360's. They are both excellent consoles and they are both excellent HD content players. - Kamill85, on 01/09/2008, -3/+23and the cost would be higher
- Tenlow, on 01/09/2008, -33/+52No, you still have to buy a PS3 as Gran Turismo 5 isnt being released for the 360.
- charlescheese, on 01/09/2008, -1/+20Toshiba has a LOT of other businesses. They are not going to destroy their ENTIRE business over HD DVD. There are a lot of investors counting on Toshiba not running their company into the ground over this format. They have a solid Hard Drive business, an excellent TV business/consumer electronics, and a whole host of other businesses. They would be totally bat ***** stupid to continue the fight at this point. They have done nothing but lose money on HD DVD, and every day they keep the fight up is a day they lose more mountains of money. I expect they'll keep quiet about HD DVD for a while in the hopes of clearing out inventory of players and movies and then when sales die out enough they'll announce the end. I have images of ET in a landfill coming to mind.
- cbreaker, on 01/09/2008, -4/+22I do - I got a PS3. But, you're right. Personally, I figured HD-DVD would win this battle of the formats, but I preferred BluRay because of the higher capacity. Not that it matters for movies, but what's used on Movies will eventually be what we all use on the PC, and 40% more space is a big deal. Still, I am not sure why these digg kids insist that HD-DVD players are suddenly no good. They will still continue to play your HD-DVD collection and there will be a lot more HD-DVD movies to hit the shelves before anything significant happens (like Toshiba saying "we give up.")
- briansearles, on 01/09/2008, -3/+21Somebody had to say it... ty.
- logicalnoise, on 01/09/2008, -1/+18which won't even play dvds
- inactive, on 01/09/2008, -4/+20No it didn't. Two formats still exist and are in competition. We need a formal choice, not a preliminary one based on rough sales figures.
- morphie, on 01/09/2008, -1/+17...and more expensive.
- Stopher, on 01/09/2008, -1/+16Of course it's possible. It's would even be possible for Sony to write drivers for the PS3 to use Microsoft's HD-DVD drive.
- exomni, on 01/09/2008, -10/+25Yes it is.
It also happens to be Apple Inc., Dell, Hewlett Packard, Hitachi, LG Electronics, Mitsubishi Electric, Panasonic (***** Electric), Pioneer Corporation, Royal Philips Electronics, Samsung Electronics, Sharp Corporation, Sun Microsystems, TDK Corporation, Thomson, Twentieth Century Fox, Walt Disney Motion Pictures Group, Buena Vista Home Entertainment and Warner Home Video Inc.'s format. - rderveloy, on 01/09/2008, -4/+18How? Remember, hindsight is 20/20. With Sony's format track record with BetaMax, MiniDisk, and recently, the UMD, you'd think that it would not be completely unreasonable to bet on HD DVD.
- NoCt1, on 01/09/2008, -1/+15WRONG. HD dvd did not come out till after the 360 So the first few batches would have not had it. Yes the battle would be different, But not by much. HD-DVD would have jacked the 360 price up anyways. They have more sales because the 360 is cheaper right now.
- motionblur, on 01/09/2008, -2/+16From Wikipedia: "Sony started two projects applying the new diodes: UDO (Ultra Density Optical) and DVR Blue (together with Pioneer), a format of rewritable discs which would eventually become Blu-ray Disc (more specifically, BD-RE).[6] The core technologies of the formats are essentially similar."
Close enough for me. - sig7, on 01/09/2008, -6/+20You don't have to ... but why would you pay an extra 200$ + in order to achieve what another console for the same price already has? Get the ps3 it's no longer the slouch it was in Q1 2007. Especially when considerings how promising 2008 looks.
- natastna2, on 01/09/2008, -5/+19And it wouldn't have launched earlier...
- hipnerd, on 01/09/2008, -4/+18I don't own a BluRay player, but there are lost of $20 titles for HD-DVD, and Amazon, Best Buy, etc. have run many "boy one get one free" sales. There's one on Amazon right now, in fact. I've seen similar offers for BluRay, but I haven't examined the pricing too closely. My impression was that they have similar deals all the time as well.
Of course, once BluRay "wins" there won't nearly as be much of an incentive to lower prices or offer great deals--or even roll out all of those cool new promised features in BD-J. I think some of the BluRay owners that are dancing on HD-DVD's grave will regret the lack of competition in the market later. - briguymaine, on 01/09/2008, -1/+14let us know how that works out.
- analbumcover96, on 01/09/2008, -3/+16this is old news it was stated in 2006 the a blu ray drive was "possible" for the xbox 360 it doesnt mean it will ever make it to market till the war is completely over
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/01/12/xbox_360_b ... - superkendall, on 01/09/2008, -1/+14That and the fact they had pretty much nothing to announce in the CES keynote, which seems unusual.
- akatsuki, on 01/09/2008, -4/+16GIven the rumors of an HD-DVD integrated 360 before CES and then the Warner announcement, you wonder if they pulled back.
- Mockylock, on 01/09/2008, -6/+18It's not a bad idea. The 360 will end up being the only console with the "option" to have either HD or BR.... or neither.
If you think about it, it's a win/win situation. - Araxen, on 01/09/2008, -1/+13Oh yes, people are just going to start throwing their PS3's in the trash if the Xbox uses Bluray now!...lol
- charlescheese, on 01/09/2008, -8/+19You're right, you're in good shape with only 1/3rd of the movies being released coming out on your format and the contract for your biggest supporter (Paramount) running out in one year if they don't bail before then. You're totally delusional if you think HD DVD survives the Warner exit.
- cbreaker, on 01/09/2008, -4/+15*slap* It's not "his format." You don't have to pick one and live with it forever. He could buy a BD player, too! And his HD-DVD player will continue to play his existing collection.
- Matteos, on 01/09/2008, -2/+13But it would have launched later.
